  • The Hand-Me-Down Apartment

I recently sat and took stock of our apartment, which I love.  An appreciative look around reminded me of how far we’ve come since moving in three years ago. This apartment has been through several phases...

The futon phase: We’ve all been there, but at a certain point, that futon ceases to mean:  We live a carefree and simple life where friends can crash on our couch/bed anytime.  It  suddenly becomes a symbol of a life that you’re ready to leave behind.  It’s hard to believe that you’re putting down roots when you have a disposable (and uncomfortable) couch. We purchased the futon when we moved to L.A. from IKEA and we were attempting to furnish our entire apartment for under $400!

Celebrating my birthday in LA.  Note the lovely sheet covering the IKEA futon, as well as the IKEA side and coffee table!

We gave it away to someone when we got...

The scary bachelor couch that we got for free from a friends parents:    It was a huge black leather early 90’s couch (it had a hide-a-bed)! It was free and it wasn’t a futon. Need I say more.

We gave it away to someone when we got...

The not so scary couch that we got for free from our own parents phase:  Besides the fact that our cat could easily climb into the foundation of the couch through a hole in the bottom, this couch was perfectly comfortable for long movie nights.

We gave it away to someone when we got...

The fabulous silk covered, custom couch we got for free from the parents of a family I did a photo session for phase:  This is the couch that we have now and although we didn’t purchase it or select it specifically, it is a gorgeous and very grown up couch.  The silk snags and stains easily, but this is a couch we will happily invest in having recovered at some point.

The carpet was also free (from the in-laws) and the coffee table (from Poppy's family) and the lamp (from my family)!

The couch phases were just the tip of the iceberg.  As I looked around I realized that the only furniture we had when we moved in that we still have is: two small dressers that were from my husbands childhood, the small IKEA side table from L.A., a tall bookshelf and a wood butcher cart.  Everything else, like the couches, has been phased out and we’ve finally arrived at a furnished apartment that we love.

    The IKEA table.

The two small dressers were from Kyle's childhood, the one on the right was picked up on the side of the road. =) Even the little cabinet was free (from my family).

    Butcher cart (from Kyle's family).

    Wine rack purchased in L.A.

    Bookshelf (from Kyle's family).

The most wonderful part of it is that everything we now have was a hand-me-down, picked up from the side of the road or made by crafty people.

The cozy reading chair (from my family).

    Kyle's desk (from my family).

The chest (a wedding gift made by our family friend).

The art desk (made by my dad).

The entry way table which used to be a full size table until Kyle cut it in half and put the legs back on (from Poppy's family).

The vanity made from a antique mirror (from Poppy's family) and the desk and chair (picked up on the side of the road).

The entertainment center (made by Kyle)...I know, aren't you impressed!

The vintage table (from Poppy's family).

The chairs (from Kyle's family)...the cat was also a hand-me-down.

The cedar bed frame (from Poppy's family).

The point is, if you’re looking to change up your home, reusing the wonderful items your family and friends don’t want or need can be a great way to recycle the “old” while making a statement in your own place by being selective.  By doing this over a couple of years we've totally transformed our apartment into a place we love.

  • Louis Vuitton

I’m not normally a huge fan of Louis Vuitton’s collections, but this time around...I’m in love.  Designer Marc Jacobs completely impressed me.  I couldn’t help but become enamored with the newly released images from their Fall 2010 campaign.  The 1950’s styling, the lighting and the composition just blew me away. The campaign was shot by Steven Meisel and features Christy Turlington, Natalia Vodianova and Karen Elson. The models ages range from 20-40 and they all look sophisticated and stunning.

    The campaign:

  • Phase 7: The Wish List

    Phase 7:

This is the final phase (for now) of my style makeover.  First I set my goals, then I analyzed my style, then I used Closet Couture to organize my clothes visually, then I did the actual organization and sorting, then I took a trip down memory lane to revisit stylish moments of my past and then I designed a uniform that works for my life and style... Now I have created a wish list of items to help complete the makeover.  I hope, in some way, that this has been inspiring or entertaining to read about!

By creating a complete list of items I would love to add to my wardrobe, I have a limited and comprehensive list of things I want.  This will help keep me on track to fill out and complete my wardrobe without buying anything unnecessary.  This will help me to determine if it's really something that will help attain the "completed wardrobe" or if it will be just another item that I don't need.  Naturally, as with all of this style makeover, this may seem a bit obsessive and over the top, but it was fun to make and I hope it will prove useful...I've recently gotten to cross off a couple of items so I left them on to show the idea!

    The Young Victoria

    Theatrical Poster

I loved this movie!  Everything about it was stunning.  The performances by Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada) as Queen Victoria and Rupert Friend (Pride and Prejudice) as Prince Albert were an absolute joy to watch.  Emily was charming, feisty and disarming in the title role.  Their love story is formed under the most unlikely circumstances and it was inspiring to see it unfold in this beautifully shot film.  The costumes are beyond exquisite, as are the locations where the film was shot.  Although my husband wasn't home when I watched this, I will be renting it again because I think he'd really enjoy it.  This movie is perfect for a summer night when it's too hot to do anything else!

    Director:

    Jean -Marc Vallée

    Other cast:

Miranda Richardson (Harry Potter films, Paris, je t'aime) as The Duchess of Kent (Victoria's overbearing and controlling mother).

Paul Bettany (A Beautiful Mind), as Lord Melbourne.

Jim Broadbent (Harry Potter films, Gangs of New York, Bridget Jones's Diary)

  • A Bump in the Road

I am so excited to share with you all (at least those of you who don’t already know) that I’m pregnant.  This is sure to be a new passion in my life (right after I stop feeling so nauseous)!  I am 14 weeks right now and we are very excited for the adventures to come. Our little one will arrive this January.

As I continue along in my pregnancy I hope to share some fun experiences, cool baby/mom things that I discover and, of course, ultrasound photos!  Here’s the first set from my 12 week appointment.  The baby is was wiggling around a lot, waving it’s arms and is looking healthy and comfortable.  At this point the tiny one was only about 4cm long.

Profile.  You can see the brain and the jaw bones beginning to form.

    Another profile.

This is the ?cute? baby face.  All the bones aren't formed yet so it looks a bit like a mexican wrestler.

    The arm.

    The whole baby.

My personal favorite.  The bottoms of the tiny feet.

  • Kacie's Quiche

    Kacie's Quiche

This is a really easy, fun and healthy recipe to make ahead in the week for lunches or for quick dinners.

    Quiche Crust:

    Ingredients:

1 1/3 cup flour (I use whole wheat flour)

1 stick very cold butter, cut into 1 inch pieces

    1 teaspoon salt

    1/4 cup ice water

    Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Place the flour into a Cuisinart mixer and sprinkle in the salt.  Give it a quick run to mix it together.  Spread out the butter pieces throughout the flour.  Turn on the mixer until the flour and butter mix and become mealy.  Finally, drizzle in the ice water until the dough combines into a ball (you probably won’t use all of the water). If you don't have a Cuisinart, you can still make the dough by hand.  It's just messier and not as easy, but it should turn out fine for this recipe!

Roll out the dough on a floured surface until it will fit into the bottom of your quiche dish.   Make sure it overlays the edges a little because it tends to shrink up a bit.  If it shrinks to much just use the bottom of a small measuring cup and smoosh it back into place...don’t worry if it doesn’t look perfect, it will turn out just fine!

Pierce the bottom of the crust about 10 times with a fork and pop it into the oven for 7-11 minutes, or until lightly golden, remove it and let it cool while you assemble the quiche ingredients.

    Quiche:

    1-2 Tablespoons toasted pine nuts

    1/2 cup crumbled goat cheese

2 large shallots, thinly sliced and sauteed in olive oil and cooled

    6 eggs, beaten

    1 cup milk

1 cup fresh spinach, lightly sauteed and cooled

1 Roma or plum tomato, thinly sliced

1/2 Tablespoon fresh herbs (I’m using thyme and chives), diced

    1 teaspoon of salt

    freshly ground black pepper

    Directions:

On the bottom of your quiche crust, layer half of the spinach, half of the shallots and half of the goat cheese. Mix up the eggs and milk with the herbs, salt and pepper until blended and pour it into the dish before sprinkling in the rest of your spinach, shallots and goat cheese.  Gently lay the tomato slices and pine nuts so they sit on top of the egg mixture and transfer the quiche gently into the oven and bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour or until a skewer comes out mostly clean (but not runny).  You don’t want to overcook your quiche or it will taste dry!

You can easily vary this recipe by adding, removing or substituting ingredients like asparagus spears, prociutto, pancetta, parmesan cheese, red onion, etc.   It's also easy to make a totally kid friendly quiche and they can assemble it. Poppy helped put this one together, you just prep all the ingredients and then they can assemble it.

  • 2 parts Cary Grant, 2 parts Clark Gable

    Gone with the Wind

It was a rainy Saturday night and I snuggled up with my mother-in-law to watch this movie.  It’s her all time favorite movie so she was the perfect person to watch it with.  After I got over Vivien Leigh playing a teenager, I got completely caught up in the story.  I couldn’t believe that it had been filmed in 1939.  Minus some of the ending events (which I won’t disclose for those of you who haven’t seen it) and Prissy, the Minnie Mouse voiced maid, I loved this movie.

    IMDB Link:

    To Catch a Thief

To Catch a Thief was definitely not the “spine tingling thriller” that the jacket cover promised it to be, but all the same it was a charming and mildly suspenseful romp. Even without the thrill, this comedy starring the gorgeous Grace Kelly, the equally gorgeous Cary Grant (although he could have laid off the George Hamilton tanner) and the gorgeous scenery in the South of France was a fun film to watch...popcorn is definitely necessary.

    It Happened One Night

There’s nothing better than a classic black and white film where you know you can expect a happy ending but the couple in question spends the whole film verbally abusing one another and missing important information due to their stubbornness!  This 1934 film must have been the blueprint for films like When Harry Met Sally.  Cary Grant and Claudette Colbert star as Peter and Ellie, a surly newspaper reporter and an escaped heiress who find them falling in love all while adamantly stating how much they can’t stand one another.  I really loved this movie!

This movie was really fun to watch.  The action was fast paced and the dialogue was even faster. The equal charm of Rosalind Russell and Cary Grant was almost overwhelming.  While I did get a bit bored part way through, I still enjoyed this film.

  • Fitness Update

Well, it’s been about six weeks since I first announced my Summer Fitness Plan and therefore, I thought it would be a good time to give a little update on how I’ve been doing.  The plan was as follows:

    The Plan:

Walk 2-4 miles (5x per week)

Tracy Anderson Mat Workout (3-5x per week)...right now I can only do certain parts of this hour-or-so long mat workout.  Eventually I will get to add the Tracy Anderson Dance Cardio DVD back in too.

I have done a great job at sticking to the walking part of it (although there were a couple of very nauseous weeks there where I didn’t do anything but lay on the couch and watch Weeds) and I continue to do the arms part of the Tracy Anderson Mat Workout or this version here which she posted online.  Try it...it’s really fun!

I was also able to do my first hike in a year!

    Hiking at Catherine Creek

I haven’t been successful at adding in any more of the mat workout because my back has been hurting quite a bit which is really frustrating.  On that note, I have come to a decision to take a month off from doctors after a year and a half of nonstop treatments.  Instead I want to take that time to focus on exercising, stretching, meditating and relaxing. It will be a much needed break from driving to and from Portland, scheduling appointments and draining my bank account in the search for pain relief.

I hope you all are having an active and healthy Summer!

  • Simple Summer Beet Salad

    Simple Summer Beet Salad

I originally had a salad like this in Paris made by my Aunt Francoise.  I can't remember exactly how she made it, so this is my interpretation of it! It's really healthy and refreshing and really, really easy.

    Ingredients:

    1 bag of frozen corn

    4 medium-large beets

    olive oil

    champagne vinegar

    2 Tablespoons fresh Basil, chopped

    1 Tablespoon fresh Tarragon, chopped

    Directions:

Place a pot on the stove with a couple inches of water and bring it to a boil.  Peel and cut up your beets into small chunks.  Place the beets in a metal colander of strainer and place them above the water, covered with a lid, to steam for about 6 minutes or until you can pierce them with a knife.  Remove the beets from the heat and pour them into a bowl.  Dump the frozen corn into the colander over the boiling water and cover for about 2-3 minutes, until thawed.  Add the corn to the bowl with the beets and then put the bowl into the fridge to chill.  Once the beets and corn are totally cool (and you’re ready to serve it) add in the chopped herbs, a good drizzle of olive oil and a splash of champagne vinegar.  Add salt and pepper to taste.

This salad is great on it’s own but can also be used on top of lettuce (with a little more olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper) with a sprinkle of feta or goat cheese.  It’s really easy and doesn’t require too much time in the kitchen which is great when it’s hot out!
