Here's the final chapter of my Fall Ready-to-Wear posts.  Hope you enjoyed all the lovely looks.

    Micheal Kors

I'm not normally a Micheal Kors fan, it's a little too trophy wife for me most of the time, but I found this collection really alluring and fresh.

    Oscar de la Renta

    Gorgeous!

    Proenza Schouler

Hernandez and McCollough always come up with such fantastic, unique pieces!

    Nina Ricci

I love the shilloettes and the color palette.

    Rag and Bone

    Super cool.

    Rodarte

I am consistently impressed with the work that Kate and Laura Mulleavy are sending down the runway.  They are visionaries!

    Roland Mouret

Soft, feminine, strong and masculine.  I love it!

    Stella McCartney

    Interesting proportions and styling.

    Valentino

This collection is so buttoned up but it's somehow incredibly sexy and alluring.

    Vera Wang

Such a great use of sheer.

    Vivienne Westwood

Westwood is so cooky!  But, she's also a fantastic designer.

    Zac Posen

  • Wonderful Weekend at Home

We had a wonderful, busy and super productive weekend.  We painted, continued to Spring Clean, visited with friends, went on our first date, and watched too much Mad Men.

On Friday I started painted the closet doors for Gigi's room.  We used the Cherry Wine color that matches the accent wall in the nursery.  They turned out so beautifully.  The black and white door knobs were the perfect final touch.  Now the nursery is complete!

While the doors were drying, Gigi and I walked downtown.  I popped into Rite Aid to buy some inexpensive wine.  In case you all weren't aware, Rite Aid has super cheap wine.  So even if you're on a budget, you can still sip vino.

Then we continued on our walk.  The daffodils are out in force.

We bumped into Amy and Poppy and Poppy's Grandma having ice cream downtown.   I got a baby baby scoop of lemon yogurt.  Yum!  Gigi looks a bit like Uncle Fester in this picture.  She is one white baby!

We popped in to visit Kyle at work and have a small beer.

I decided Gigi needed to try on some new boots to cover up her silly crew socks.

We put Gigi in her new favorite pj's and headed over to our friends house for a margarita and a visit.

We spent Saturday Spring Cleaning the pantry and the garage.

My Dad and Stepmom came over to babysit G so we could go out to dinner.  Not only did they babysit and buy us dinner but they also cut a heart out of a check I'd written them.  That was incredibly thoughtful and generous.  Thanks guys.

We spent Sunday doing more cleaning and organizing and decorating.  Calypso didn't offer to help.

    How was your weekend?

  • A Few Happy Thoughts.

Sitting in my favorite chair, wearing my favorite pajamas, sipping tea from my favorite mug.

It is a blustery, stormy Tuesday morning and I am sitting having a cup of tea.  I just put Gigi down for her morning nap.  I am feeling so happy these days that I thought I'd share a bit of my positivity with you.  Here's a few things I'm grateful for...  I am so grateful that everyone I love is healthy and happy.  I am grateful that the first three months of being a mom have been so completely enjoyable.  I am grateful for my thoughtful, handsome hubby, for our sweet and cozy little house and for that fact that, even though we are broke, we still have organic food in the fridge and cute shoes on our feet... hey, I love shoes.  I'm grateful that, after being pregnant, I'm not suffering from chronic back pain the way I used to.  I'm grateful that I have so many creative outlets.  I'm thrilled that our tax return will allow me to upgrade my photography equipment and build a small studio.  I'm so appreciative of all the love and support we've gotten from our wonderful friends and families since the arrival of our little one.  We are truly and ridiculously blessed.

What are you all grateful for today?

  • Spring Cleaning! (Part 2)

Hi!  I haven't given up on Spring Cleaning.  We've just been chipping away at.  One space at a time.  The divide and conquer method is working well for us.  This week I tackled a few the areas in our house that drive me crazy!  The hallway/entryway, the pantry and the spice cabinet.  Here are the before and after pictures...

    Hallway before...

This area become a dumping zone for everything random.  Batteries, a cookie sheet, old gift bags...

    Hallway after...

Now it's a perfect organization zone!

Kyle put these hooks in so I could hang my purse and diaper bag.

We have a recycle bin just below the mail organizer so it's easy to get rid of the things we don't need and file the things we do.

Simple bulletin boards and a big ol' calendar to keep things clear and organized.

    The pantry before...

    This was seriously a disaster.

I couldn't get anything out without toppling something else and I kept buying things I already had!

    Pantry after...

I bought a few more plastic containers and labels which help make this space super clean and organized. All the plastic kind of creeps me out so when our budget allows I'll be buying some nice glass containers.

The spice cabinet before and after...

As stated before, I hate how easily this cabinet gets messy.  I got some tiny plastic containers to help organize all of the bulk spices we buy so they weren't in random, unlabeled bags.

This week we have been tackling the garage (eek!) and the office (double eek!).  It feels sooo great.

  • Like, Woah!

A friend of ours does these progression photos during pregnancy.  She recently completed and handed it over to me.  It's astonishing to look at the process.  We took one every 4-6 weeks starting around the fourth month.  Our bodies are pretty amazing.  I mean, I grew a human being in 39 weeks.  That's mind boggling!  Sometimes I find myself staring at Gigi thinking, I made you!  I can hardly remember what it felt like to be pregnant, so it's a wonderful thing to get to look back at the journey all in one little picture!

    Another view of the progression...

  • The Seven Year Itch

    The Seven Year Itch

Wow, it's been a while since I watched one of the classic films from my list!  So much for my prediction that the winter would allow me plenty of time for classic film watching.  Anyhow... I recently watched The Seven Year Itch starring Miss Monroe as The Girl and Tom Ewell as the poor (married) schmuck, Richard, who becomes completely enamored with her.  This film is set during a sweltering Manhattan summer in the 1950's.  Richard's wife of seven years has taken their children and headed for out of town to relax and cool off.  Richard resolves to be good while she's away.  He won't drink, he won't smoke and he won't fool around like all the other men do!  But when The Girl moves in upstairs he finds himself tempted by her in every way.  What results is a silly and sexy romantic comedy.  This movie was totally enjoyable.  I love a good Billy Wilder film!

  • Impromptu Brother Visit!

I was really pleased and surprised when, on Monday night, my brother Ryan called and asked if he could come for a visit!  We had my Lemony Roasted Chicken and Potatoes for dinner, my favorite Lemon Pound Cake (Test Kitchen) for dessert and Hot Toddy's for fun.  It was such a fun, relaxing visit.

    G loves Uncle Ryan.

    A little evening cuddling...

I love my brother.  It was so wonderful to get to spend the evening with him!

  • Working It Out

Every Sunday, my sister Meghan and her lovely husband Rob...(source)...go for a nice, long walk and catch up on all the weeks little things.  Having a baby... ...has certainly reduced the amount of time that Kyle and I have to chat. Everywhere we've lived, we've always done the ol' walk and talk.  But, since I was medically ordered off my feet (all the way back in October)......we really haven't picked up our walks again.  I was talking with my sister about how the lack of communication with your partner adds up very quickly.  She suggested we have Sunday walk dates.  So, for the last few Sundays Kyle and I have been taking long walks, catching up and investing in our relationship.

So, what does "Friday Fun-day" have to do with Sunday walks?  Well, this last Sunday we were chatting and we realized that we were both feeling exhausted and overloaded and that, despite our efforts, we always end up with a messy house, and too much on the To Do List.

We realized that we really don't do a good job staying on top of things.  B.G. (Before Gigi) we were able to get away with this but now... there's just no way.  Contributing to our messy house issue is that we have gotten in the classic Pacific Northwest-it's-supposed-to-be-Spring-but-it's-still-raining pattern of watching too much television.  We just watched two seasons of in about a month (did anyone else not get the finale?), and an entire season of  in a little under two weeks (it's so good)!  Basically, we camp out on the couch (not talking) and watch episode after episode of Project RunwayMad Men or whatever show we're currently indulging in!  Meanwhile, the dishes from dinner sit on the counter and the laundry remains in a state of limbo.  Last Sunday we came up with a plan to combat this place we've found ourselves in.  Here goes...

New House Rule: No internet, no texting, etc. after 6:00pm.

Sunday: Relax.  No f'ing TV.  Walk and catch up.  Time to discuss upcoming events, goals, plans and how much weone another.  Kyle cooks dinner.

Monday: Grocery shopping.  Laundry.  No TV. (Read a book people!)

Tuesday: Kyle does the bills.  Kacie does homework.

Wednesday: Garbage out.  Movie date night.

    Thursday: Kacie does more homework.

Friday: Fun-day!  Do whatever we wanna do.

Saturday:  Project day.  Work on the house.  Work on the garden.  Do fun things but get things done.

We're taking steps to simplify things by delegating jobs and encouraging each other to stay on top of things.  Although we've only put that plan into action for the past week, we are feeling accomplished, satisfied and we are confidant that we are finally on the right track to breaking our bad habits!  We are pretty exhausted from constantly going, going, going... but we know once we get used to this new routine we'll be so much happier!

On a side note, this last week was a bit of a struggle with Gigi's nighttime routine.  We read in our book (Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child) that, around 3 months of age, babies need to go to bed earlier... like 5:30-6:30pm!  We've been aiming to get her in bed by 7:30pm but, for the past three nights she's cried for a loooooong time.  Finally passing out around 9:00!  We have been soothing machines! Normally she's a great self soother, jus a few minutes of fussing and then we're in the clear. Could the culprit be a "too late bedtime" as our book suggests?  She does also seem to be teething a bit so we're going to try giving her a couple teething tablets and tucking her in between 6-6:30pm!

Any thoughts on any of this, the walks, the talks, the Lost finale, the baby bedtime?  I'd love to hear about your experience with any of it.

Here's to learning as we go.

  • Oui Oui... It's Time For Crepes!

Poppy and I spend all day together every Monday and we almost always do a cooking project together.  She loves being my sous chef.  I recently made Tyler Florence's Blueberry Blintzes.  They are so easy and yummy.  When Poppy came over the next morning we used the leftover crepe batter to make fun, sweet crepes together.  It was so much fun to get all the fixin's ready, make them up and devour them.  We both had sugar comas afterward but it was worth it!  Next time, we're going to make savory crepes with healthier filling options.

    Blueberry Blintzes

    Melted butter, lemon zest, strawberries...

cinnamon sugar, regular sugar, whipped cream and powdered sugar.

Poppy had her face painted specially "for ballet".

Fold them up and top with a little dusting of powdered sugar.

Tyler Florence's Crepe recipe is online here!  Keep in mind the mixture has to rest for at least an hour so it's a good brunch or lunch project!  Good savory fillings could be spinach, prociutto, mozzarella cheese, sauteed shallot, mushrooms, shredded chicken... really anything!  That's what's so great about crepes!

  • Spring Cleaning! (Part 3)

Today I completed the final stage of Spring Cleaning!  It feels so great to have it done!  We tackled the office, living room, dining room and garage.  It was definitely a lot of work but I feel so accomplished now that it's done.  We are ready to paint the rest of the house, transform the office into a guest room and turn the garage into a photo studio!

    The office before...

The office was by far the WORST space to deal with!  Ugh.  Since moving in, it completely became the "extra room" that we weren't using that simply got overloaded with junk!  The only time it ever got cleaned up was to put an air matress in it for company.  So we decided to make it into a guest room.  We don't have all the bedroom stuff yet but we're going to get it very soon from my Grandpa.

This art table is an area I have NEVER been able to keep clean and organized.  It's a great art table but not a great desk.  We decided to move it to the garage in order to better use it as a project table.

Kyle's desk. (See, I'm not the only messy one!)

We had way to many books and our closet was a complete mess of boxes, envelopes, folders and gift bags!

    The office after...

Yay.  Got the desk moved out to the garage and made space for a guest bed.

My sister helped me edit the book collection.  I took them all to the used book store today and will have a bit of credit to buy new books!  Kyle's desk will also be moved out and passed on in order to make room for guest room furniture.  I'm really excited about transforming this room.

I'm going to make this closet into "my office".  But for now, at least it's organized!

    The living room before...

Cluttery and crowded.  This space was definitely less than cozy.

The entertainment area was cluttered and disorganized.  Wondering what those things are on the floor?  They're VHS tapes.  Remember those?  Wondering why I have them?  Me too.

My cool entry way table had become a drop-off point for stuff.  It was really bugging me.  This was intended to be a nice little zen spot and instead it became a big stressful mess.

This is the baby bin.  Obviously it had become totally disorganized and full of junk.

    The living room after...

    Super clean and bright!

I took all my photo books from my art table and moved them into the living room.

Yay!  All clean.  My magazines are organized and ready for looking through.  I also organized my photo albums and made a photo wall!  I love it!

Baby bin all nice and organized.

    The dining room before...

This area of the house was feeling crowded and claustrophobic.

Between the table, the wine wrack and the new baby play mat we were constantly tripping over stuff.  It was frustrating!

Kyle has been doing lots of studying in the living room so we always have a pile of stuff in the corner.

Overflowing wine rack.  Only way to organize this?  Start drinkin'.

I took the leaf out of the table and ditched two of the chairs.  We're going to move this table into the guest room with these two chairs when we get my Grandma's dining table next month.  It's so much more intimate this way.  There's still a pile of stuff in the corner but it's much more organized that it was before.

I drank a lot!  Just kidding Mom!  I took the overflow out to the garage.

    Entryway closet before and after...

That's a bit better.  I hung up Gigi's carriers and took some old coats to Goodwill.

    The garage before...

Man was our garage a mess!  And this is after we took the old washer and dryer to Goodwill.  The intention for the garage is that it will function as a project zone, home brewery, photo studio and storage space.  That's a tall order for one garage but we're on our way to making it a reality.

    Garage after...

    So much better!

The art table ready for action.  We still have a bit of work to do but this is a great start.

  • Spanish Spinach (Catalan Style)

I'm so glad it's Friday!  Phew.  I had an exam yesterday and was having such a hard time motivating after completing my Spring Cleaning.  I'm busting out of town today with the baby and heading up to visit my best friend (and G's Godmama) Marion for the weekend.  Kyle's got some major studying to do so we'll leave him to write his papers about whisky (yeah, that's what you write about when you're getting a Masters in brewing and distilling).  I'll have a Wonderful Weekend post for you when I get back!

In the meantime... here is one of my favorite recipes. This recipe is incredibly easy, healthy and delicious.  So far all of the recipes on the blog have been my own, but I learned this one watching Spain... On the Road Again.  I use a bit more currants and pine nuts then their recipe calls for.  I make it as a side to accompany fish most of the time.  But every once in a while when I'm feeling I need a little iron boost, I'll make a big plate of it for lunch.

Spanish Spinach (or Spinach Catalan Style)

    Ingredients:

    olive oil

    salt

    freshly ground black pepper

    large bunch of spinach

one small handful pine nuts (not toasted)

    one small handful dried currants*

    Directions:

Wash the spinach thoroughly and dry it.  Heat the olive oil over medium high heat for a few minutes before adding in a small handful of the currents and the pine nuts (if you can only find toasted pine nuts don't put them in until the end or they will over-toast).  Once the currants start to expand and the pine nuts begin to toast toss in the spinach and saute until wilted.  Season very lightly with salt and pepper and serve immediately.  This dish hardly needs any salt.  For some reason it's very easy to over salt it and it's ruined.  Seriously, barely a pinch will do.

*Usually you can buy dried currants in the bulk dept.  I highly recommend only buying as much as you need for the recipe.  For some reason they seem to go bad and get freaky little bugs in them after a few weeks in the pantry.  I've thrown away a lot of them!

  • Wonderful Weekend: Happy Easter

This weekend I packed up the baby and headed up to visit my best friend Marion and her family for Easter.  Kyle had to stay behind to sip write a paper about cognac, eat healthy cheeseburgers and ice cream and catch up on his studying sleep.  We headed out Friday morning and just got home this afternoon!  It was so much fun to get to visit and reconnect with my friend and her family.  I have to admit, traveling alone with the baby and taking care of everything was not exactly easy, especailly when said baby decides to spit up and poop more than she ever has before therefore making the number of clothing items/diaper rags that you packed totally insufficient.  But, I'm so glad I made the effort and went on this little mini-adventure with her.  G Love and I had a fabulous time.  Here's a few pictures from my trip!

    Friday...

We set out bright and early.

I stopped at my Dad and Stepmom's little ranch to have a quick cup of tea and visit with my cousin.

Warning... this next photo is not politically correct.

Dad had a special book for Gigi.

I love this wall color!  Nance helped me pick colors for the guest room!

    Along the way.

"WINE N MUCH MORE"... What more do you need?

Marion's cutie pie daughter, Nina, holding Gigi.

     Saturday...

    Taking a nice long walk/hike.

When we got back to the house Marion made goat cheese.

A puppy and a baby. Katie was very happy.

    Gigi getting cuddles.

Marion's husband Alfonso whipped up a couple Spanish tortillas.  Yum!

I brought a couple growlers of beer that Kyle made and named after Gigi.  If you live in the PNW look for Little G ESB on tap at your local taphouse!

Marion is a fabulous bread baker!

    Sunday... Happy Easter!

Gigi being a bunny.  Silly baby!

Alfonso loves babies.  He's got one on the way but in the meantime he cuddled with G.

    Another long walk.

I popped outside while the kids were hunting Easter eggs to snap a few photos.  These kids are so fantastic, bright, enjoyable and silly!

    I LOVE her socks!

  • Poppy and G

Poppy is obsessed with Baby G!

She LOVES her "sister".  She is often very disappointed when Gigi is asleep.  Hence the following Poppyism...

Wouldn't it be great if you had twins?!  Then when one baby was sleeping the other one would be awake!!!

    Meghan, Ryan and I.

Thanks Mom and Dad.  Sorry 'bout that.  Hee hee.

  • Post Pregnancy Style: Mama Makeover (Part 1)

Okay!  I've had it!  I am in need of a makeover of Gary Marshall proportions! (See below):

Not that I think I look like a prostitute... you get the idea.  Financially speaking, I think the best place to start is a hair makeover. (I'm doing wedding photography in trade for hair-doing)! I haven't gotten my hair cut for 5 months!  I am loving the length I have now...

It feels like it took years to grow it out from this...

I have no interest in doing a drastic cut.  So... if I'm not going to chop it all off, how about a different color?  I've never colored my hair before and am a little nervous but, as a good friend said to me yesterday via email, "It is one of the most fun things in life to color your hair." (Thanks for the advice.)  To be honest, I'm a little afraid about dying my hair. I've been feeling the itch to do something a little fun and fearless!  I've always been blonde...

My mom used to call me her "little toilet brush" because I was skinny and my white hair stuck straight up.

Maybe it's time for something new...

    A nice light auburn/strawberry blonde?

    Golden brown?

    Rich red?

    Super blonde?

    Deep brown?

I'm headed to the salon tomorrow morning!  I'd love your thoughts and suggestions!!!

    Comment [0]

  • Mama Makeover (Part 1): Before and After

Thank you all so much for your suggestions!  I got a few votes for keeping it blonde, a few for the light brown and a few for the strawberry blonde.  I decided to go with a warm brown with little bit of red.  In case anyone is interested, she foiled my whole head (and I have a lot of hair) alternating my starting color, a dark red and a bright blonde.  Kind of a mix of my blonde and these two photos...

So basically, I took ALL of your suggestions!  I actually would have loved the change to be a bit more dramatic but but my hairdresser said she couldn't do straight to the dark from my bright blonde because it's like trying to put color on clear... there's nothing for the color to stick too.  In fact, the red will fade out within a couple of months and I'll be back close to where we started from!  But she said next time we can go darker/richer if I want!  She's such a great hairdresser because she keeps the big picture in mind, the grow out, the transition and the maintenance.  It's so fun to have a change.  It's just what I needed and now that I've done it once I won't be such a chicken about doing it again!
