  • 4 Months Old!

A few things that happened this month...

Your Dad named a beer "Little G" after you...

We started doing story time each night and on Sunday mornings...

You and Calypso are buddies at last...

    Uncle Ryan came to visit.

You like to play with your reflection.

    You cracked yourself up.

You started crying when our friends hold you...

You fit your fist in your mouth...

Dad gave you your first belly raspberry.

  • A Special Note For My Mom

    Dear Mom,

Thank you for loving me unconditionally, being one of my closest friends, all of the hugs and kisses, the thoughtful advice, the life lessons, every bowl of cereal you poured, lunch you packed and dinner you prepared, for all the checks you wrote, the daily phone calls, the sacrifices, the copays, the back to school clothes, the sink baths...   But most of all, thank you for being you.  Becoming a mother this year has given me a new understanding of everything that you are.  You always expressed to me that you loved me for who I was, that you were proud of me.  You have always supported my choices and I have never once doubted that your love for me was unconditional.  Now that I'm a mom, I find myself loving you even more than I did just a few months ago (which was a lot)!  I am so blessed to have you as my mom.  You mean the world to me.  Thanks for being the woman that you are and the mom that you are.

    Love you,

    Kacie

  • Happy Mother's Day!

Exactly one year ago, I found out I was pregnant.  I was only a couple weeks into the journey when Mother's Day came around.  Becoming a mother has been the best adventure of my life so far.  I am reveling it, loving it and cherishing every aspect of it.  When I wake up (very early) each morning and look at the squaking, smiling little creature next to me, I feel completely happy.  I can't wait to watch her grow up into the girl, young lady, and woman that she will become.  Motherhood has been more wonderful than I could have imagined it would be.  I'm completely over the moon for this little girl.  As my Grandma would have said, she's the bees knees.

There is so much energy, intensity, joy and excitement surrounding pregnancy and babies!  It's such a unique experience to be on the journey to becoming a mother.  I asked those of you who had a baby or have been expecting this year what you loved most about the motherhood experience.  Here's what you had to say...

Anfisa with her two daughters, Olivia (2.5yrs) and Kayla (4mos).

The best thing about being a mom is seeing my children learn and grow.

Megan with her duaghter, Lucia Denise (10mos).

What I love most about being a mom is loving Luci!

Traci with her two daughters, Ottilie (5yrs) and Opal (6mos).

What I love about being a mom is hearing my girls laugh and knowing that they are happy.

Marion and her duaghter, Nina (3.5yrs) and a baby due next September.

The thing I love most about being a mom is finding out that I am capable of such unconditional, (and often irrational), love for another human being.

Brittany with her daughter Beyonca (3mos) and Beyonca's Godmother, Kari.

Brittany: When I peek into her room at 5 am and she just catches a glimpse of me... that big smile, that's my girl, she's my world.

Kari: Becoming a Godmother this year gave me a front row seat to the magical progression that is motherhood, watching Brittany evolve into the beautiful mother that she is has been an extraordinary learning experience for me.

Becca with her daughter, Kesha Lee (8mos).

Being a mom is indescribable. To create a life, watch them grow, help them develop and become a person of their own... It is the one, true unconditional love in life.

Kate and her son, Waylon (2wks).

I love the fact that I love someone so deeply I get excited about his poop. Also, now I really have a new love and understanding for my own mother; I understand what those dopey looks she gives me are all about.

Maria and her daughter, Evelia (11mos).

There's nothing like seeing the excitement and joy in my baby's face and body when she sees her mama. That smile makes the tiredness and stresses of life go away. I am so blessed to be a mama. It makes me feel complete.

Jessica and her daughter, Claire (8mos).

I love that when I tell Claire to wiggle, she does.  I love that with every day that passes she looks more like me.  I love learning all the selfless lessons that you have no choice but to learn.

Ellen with her three kids, Joe (5yrs), Kate (2.5yrs) and Baby K (3mos).

I love best the moments when they make me truly laugh and, since I don't live with my sister anymore, finally having someone to share potty humor with. I also love the power- the power to create wonderful memories that will shape their future selves, the power to ask of them that which they are capable and see them change and grow.

Stephanie with her son, Harrison (1.5yrs) and a baby girl due in August.

What I love most about being a mom is the quintessential lesson our little ones teach us about truly being in the moment.  I love re-experiencing the world through the curious eyes of a toddler.

Kelsey and her son Kameron (1yr).

The best part about being a mom - is that I learned what love truly is. I know it's cliche and all but I see a different outlook on life and feel like I am not living for myself anymore, I am living and doing everything for my family. Having my son has inspired me to be a better person and to raise a wonderful and happy baby regardless what life tosses me!

Nicole and her daughter, Madison (2wks).

My favorite thing about being a Mom is how complete my family is now, I love watching my husband relishing his new role as a Dad, it makes me so happy. Madison's numerous facial expressions as she sleeps amazes me, I am in awe of how beautiful she is.

    Jessica, expecting in May.

I'm so looking forward to meeting this tiny person that has been growing inside of me for 36 weeks, sharing he or she with my husband and learning who they are and will be.

    Me and Gigi (4mos).

The thing I love most about being Gigi's mama is knowing that I get to be a part of the life she will create for herself and I get to encourage, support and love her every day.

Thank you all so much for sharing your photographs and thoughts.  I wish you all a truly wonderful Mother's Day.

    Love,

    Kacie and Baby G too!

  • Wonderful Weekend: Mother's Day

We had such a fun weekend in Seattle.  It was busy and went by really quickly! Gigi got to visit lots of family and friends and we had a great Mother's Day brunch before heading home.  Hope you all had a lovely weekend.  Here's a few photos from the weekend.

Saturday:  We spent the day on Saturday visiting with our families.  Gigi got some quality time in with the great grandparents!  She's one lucky baby.

    Gigi visiting with Great Nana...

and getting bear hugs from Great Grandpa.

    My brother, Grandpa and Dad.

Sunday:  We had a family and friends over to Kyle's parents place for a casual brunch.

My very first frittata.  SO EASY!  It's like making a quiche without having to make the crust!

So happy to be a Mama.

Me, my sis, my mom and my brother.

After the nice brunch we had to pack up and head out.  The ride home was long but G did pretty good.  It is nice to be home but we had a wonderful time up visiting our families.  Thanks for such a fun weekend!  I had a wonderful first Mother's Day.

  • Kale Chips

Ok, since the Grilled Kale Caesar Salad recipe from last week got such a great response, I am posting my Kale Chip recipe today!  These are so easy!  They only take minutes to make and are a great snack.  Make them up for a midday boost, to replace popcorn while you watch a movie, or for a snack pack for a trip to the zoo or a picnic.  I can eat an entire bunch of Kale Chips on my own.  They are delicious and so good for you!  Enjoy!

    Kale Chips

    Ingredients:

    Kale

    Olive Oil

    Salt

    Optional: Lemon zest

    Directions:

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Wash and dry the kale. Strip it from the stalk into large pieces.  Spread into a single layer on a baking sheet (or two).  Drizzle with olive oil and bake for about 12-15 minutes until kale has crisped up and the edges are a bit brown.  Remove from oven and season to taste with salt.*  Top with a fresh sprinkling of lemon zest.

*I recommend seasoning after baking because the kale shrinks up so much it's hard to gauge how much salt to use!

  • Spring Detox/Budget Crackdown Update!

It's been a month and a half since Kyle and I set out on our Spring Detox/Budget Crackdown.  In a nutshell, we made the commitment to be really active and eat healthy everyday and to reduce our grocery budget in half for the month of April!   Major goals!  So how did we do?  Pretty great actually!

    EXERCISE:

THE GOAL: Our goals for exercising are... to do something active (workout, go for a walk, shoot some hoops) five days out of the week.  Rain or shine.  No matter what.

    THE RESULT:

Okay, so we weren't active every single day, but I went for lots of walks, did some dance cardio and spent less time sitting on my bum.  Kyle works so hard during the day at the brewery that he is active without having to try!  It helps that the weather is starting to improve and we've been getting outside more.  I've been walking with Poppy to ballet and to pick her up from school and this weekend I went for a four hour walk!  Yeah, seriously.  It was soooo nice out and the lilacs were in bloom and Gigi was wearing her finest Parisian ensemble and all I wanted to do was to be outside so I just... kept... walking!  I was hoping to keep my back pain at bay by increasing my activity.  Unfortunately, despite my efforts, my back pain is returning with a vengeance.  It's incredibly frustrating and disappointing.  The fact that I have seriously considered getting pregnant again (which includes the whole giving birth thing) in order to alleviate it is an indication of how bad it is.  I'm back to slapping on icy-hot patches and popping ibuprofen every night and squirming all over the place because I can't sit still.  Not sure what to do now... I have no real desire to become like that weird mom with the 20 kids so I'll have to find some other remedy that doesn't involve pregnancy!

Lilacs and a beret!  Perfect for a loooong Saturday walk!  Noteez Meez 'Epbern on zee onezee!  Oui, she eez somking a zeegarette.  But oo carez, eez French, no?

    EATING HEALTHY

    THE GOAL:

Our goals for eating are... for the entire month of April we are cutting out as much as possible of the following: fried foods, refined foods, processed foods, bad saturated fats and desserts/sugar.

    THE RESULT:

We did a great job eating healthy!  Yes we did cheat and share a burger and sweet potato fries and we did have a few slices of pizza and I did have a Blizzard, but overall we ate really, really healthy!  We skipped the desserts, cut back on the red wine, cut out the refined carbs and had light, healthy dinners.  It felt great to cut out some of the junk we'd fallen into the habit of eating.

A great bonus to the healthy eating is that I dropped the last of my pregnancy weight!  From 131 to 125 which is exactly what I weighed when I got pregnant.  I also lost one more inch on my waistline (from 37-28-37 to 37-27-37).  I have to admit it feels pretty great to be back to "my old self".  Growing up as a gymnast, dancer and diver I have always felt the best when I felt healthy and fit.  Here's a little snapshot of me now...

    BUDGET:

THE GOAL: Reduce our grocery budget from $475 to around $200 (that's $50 a week on groceries)!

    THE RESULT:

We did it!  It was challenging and, at times a little frustrating but overall I found it to be an empowering experience!  We were able to eat healthy, mostly local/organic foods for half the amount we had been previously spending.  As you all know, I love to eat and love to cook so this was a huge challenge for me.  I have been known to buy $50 ingredients for one indulgent meal!  We really didn't have a choice since we are really broke right now but, by setting this goal for our budget, I made it feel like a choice!  It ended up being fun-ish and we are basically using the same menu again this month but we're adding in a few changes to richen up the protein and iron and to keep things fresh.  I'll have a couple more great easy and inexpensive recipes for you this month!  The menu from last month is on same post linked above and here.  I promise I'll have a new menu for June!

Did anyone else set health, fitness or budget goals for the month?

Also... if you haven't already, don't forget to check out my last post and Giveaway

  • Doing It All and My First Post Pregnancy Sushi!

It's early on a Wednesday morning and I'm trying to psych myself up for a day of running errands.  Some days I seem able to juggle "it" all and other days it all seems pretty overwhelming.  What is "it"?  "It" could be any number of things like: keeping the house picked up, doing the laundry (what is it about having a baby that literally triples your laundry?  I don't get it!), making menus and grocery shopping, remembering to buy dental floss, exercising, auditions, reading up on What the *&^% is My Baby Doing Now and What Should I Do About It?, working, doing homework and cramming for exams, reading back issues of Vanity Fair that I never got to (I'm currently perusing Nov. 2010), squeezing in a shower, prepping dinner, remembering to buy wine (very important), shooting/editing photos (also love this)...  All the while I am also caring for my little one.  Getting her on a schedule, changing her, playing with her, changing her again.  Plus, I have to kiss her at least 100 times each day and that takes time!  I'm trying to keep up with her demand for milk which isn't going very well and I think I may have to add "buy formula" to my list today.  I don't think we will have to give it to her right away but we need to have it on hand.  For about a month now I haven't been making quite enough milk for her so we have been tapping into the supply of milk in the freezer.  Last night, while I had class, we used the last bag of back up milk.  Not a good feeling.  There's some prescription drug I can take to boost my milk supply but I'm not sure if I want to go there.  Phew, that's a lot to be juggling on a Wednesday morning!  Don't get me wrong, I love my role as a working mom/housewife and I get great joy from it but there are days when I wish someone else would come clean the bathrooms and run to the store for me!  Ah, well, it's sunny out and I am going to sit here and sip my tea and pump my milk and then I'm going to head out and try to get it all done.  Working Moms of the world, my hat's off to you.  How do you do it all?

On another note...  last week Kyle and I splurged and joined our friends and their adorable daughter for a sushi dinner.  It was totally out of our budget but I begged Kyle to take me and played the "I haven't had sushi for a year!" card.  Here's a few photos from our fun double triple date.

  • What To Do When You're Feeling Overwhelmed

As you all know, I was feeling a bit overwhelmed this week.  I had lots of errands to run and things to do.  But instead of doing them we decided to just have a BBQ instead!  I went for a long walk with G, filled the house with lilacs, invented a accidental cocktail (I'll have the recipe perfected for you all next week) and invited some friends over to relax and enjoy the gorgeous spring weather.

    Making Grilled Kale Caesar Salad.

It was such a fun, relaxing evening.  After our lovely BBQ (on Wednesday) I was feeling totally reengergized.  I got up on Thursday and ran the rest of my errands and even got the car serviced, I skipped class and sat outside with Kyle and my friend Danelle having a beer.  Now I'm ready for the weekend.  Time for more grilling and relaxing.

Do you all have fun plans for the weekend?

  • Documentaries!

Kyle and I have been really into documentaries lately/ever since Kyle made me reduce the number of Netflix movies I get at a time.  There are loads of them that you can watch instantly on Netflix so we've been enjoying quite a few lately.  Here's my thoughts on the following documentaries...

    The Kings of Pastry

This documentary follows sixteen talented pastry chefs as they prepare and compete for three intense days in the Meilleurs Ouvriers de France.  The competition is incredibly serious.  Each of these chefs must produce several masterpieces in order to be named (by the President) one of the best.  The ultimate honor is to be named a MOF champion and don the prestigious blue, red and white striped collar.  This is an honor taken so seriously in France that, if you wear the collar and have not been awarded it, you can go to jail.  We enjoyed watching this documented competition which is essentially the Olympics of the pastry world.  If you enjoy The Food Network competitions and Iron Chef you'll enjoy this one.

    The Pixar Story

The Pixar Story documents the incredible journey behind the creation of the ultimate animation studio.  It follows the animators from their days in school to their successes with Toy Story, Finding Nemo and The Incredibles.  It is fascinating to watch these talented artsits and computer geniuses use their skills to create a new artform while respecting the foundation of animation laid before them.  One thing I loved about this documentary was that there seemed to be no ego amongst these artists.  They were true collaborators which is perhaps the key to thier continued success.  I really loved this documentary.  It was so fun to watch.

    Grey Gardens

Grey Gardens was an odd documentary made in 1957.  It chronicles Edith Bouvier Beale and her daughter Edie as they live out their crazy days in their ruined mansion in East Hampton, NY.  They lived in isolation together for decades before nearly being evicted due to unsanitary living conditions.  Kyle and I only made it through about half of this documentary before giving up.  It was... odd.  But, it seems to have a popular following so don't let my opinion stop you if you are intruiged.  We also watched the Grey Gardens film with Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange.  Also odd.  I'd love to hear someone else's thoughts on these!

     My Kid Could Paint That

Out of all the documentaries we watched, this one seems to have stuck with me the most.  It follows the rise of a four year old abstract painter named Marla whose work begins selling for thousands and thousands of dollars.  It starts out as a very simple, beautiful and pure story which quickly spirals into a mystery about the authenticity of the paintings, the intentions of the parents and the real meaning behind abstract art.  We really enjoyed this documentary and have found ourselves talking about it days later.  I'd love to hear your thoughts on this one?  Did Marla paint her own work?  Did her father coach her?  Do you like her paintings?

    Ballerina

I watched this one night when Kyle was off doing a beer event.  This film follows five dancers in the intense world of the Kirov ballet in Russia.  Their careers are determined, judged and pushed to the limit in this real-life look at a prima ballerina's life.  The dancer's range in age from 17 to 32 which adds a dramatic element to the challenges and pressures they face in the ballet world.  I really enjoyed watching this film.  Definitely worth viewing if you love dance and/or watching people push themselves to their physical and artistic limit.

    Man on Wire

Two words.  Crazy Frenchman.  Woah.  This film is so bizarre!  Tightrope walker Phillippe Petite was definitely wackadoodle.  This film explores and follows him in his lifelong quest to walk on a tightrope strung between the twin towers of the WTC in NYC.  That pretty much says it all.

     Picture Me

This documentary follows Sarah Ziff, a young woman who has had a fairly successful modeling career.  Frustrated with certain aspects of her industry, Ziff (with the help of her boyfriend) turns the camera on herself and documents the ups and downs of a career in the modeling world.  We enjoyed watching this one.  It's fascinating to get a glimpse into a completely unknown world.  High fashion is strange.  It is alluring and repulsive at the same time.  This documentary did a good job capturing it all.

Who the #$&% is Jackson Pollock?

Another crazy person, another documentary.  This film covers trials and challenges that Teri Horton, a foul mouthed, chain smoking, cheap white wine drinking, white trash semi truck driver, purchases a painting for $5 that may or may not be a Jackson Pollock painting.  Along with her son and a forensic specialist, she sets out on a ten year odyssey to prove that it's a Pollock.  Teri is definitely a lil' crazy.  Apparently crazy people make good subjects for documentaries!  We didn't totally love this film but it was fun to watch.

    View the trailer here.

I'd LOVE to hear your thoughts on these!

  • Margarita Congelada

    Margarita Congelada

    (pronounced cone-hey-la-da)

Today Gigi and I are having a lovely, cozy movie day.  I'm sipping tea, watching movies based on Jane Austen novels, working on the blog and cuddling with my babe.  Last week I promised to have perfected my accidental cocktail.  So here is the recipe!  This Margarita on Rocks 2.0 was a very happy accident.  Without warning, the sun decided to come out and some little voice deep in the back of my mind whispered to me, "It's margarita time".  Yes!!!  But, we only had a couple lemons and one lime and I didn't want to spend any time making my yummy Fresh Squeezed Margarita and I don't ever use store bought mix cause it gives me a sugar headache.  What to do???  This near tragedy was avoided when I remembered that, the last time I had made a big pitcher of my margarita mix, I had frozen what we didn't use in ice cube trays!  Woohoo!  Rather than waiting for the cubes to melt before making up a regular ol' margarita, I simply made one over the frozen cubes of mix!  It is super fresh, sweet and sour and definitely hits the spot!

    Ingredients:

margarita mix (don't add the tequila though!!!), frozen into cubes*

    sugar

1-2 limes, zest one, slice one into wedges

    ice

    Directions:

Mix together a pinch of sugar and some lime zest on a plate.  Wet the rim of your cocktail glass with a lime wedge before dipping it into the sugar and lime zest mixture.  Fill the glass with the frozen mix ice cubes and a couple regular ice cubes.  Pour in a couple ounces of good tequila.  Top with a sprinkling of the sugar and lime zest mixture and a lime wedge.  That's it!

This drink is great if you love tequila.  It's like having whisky on the rocks but for tequila lovers!  The sugar added to the drink and on the glass is needed because otherwise it's too tart and the regular ice cubes help to water down the mix as you sip.  By the time you get to the end of your drink (unless you're a really fast drinker) it will taste just like my regular margarita!  Come to think of it, if you are a really fast drinker, skip the regular ice cubes and just use the frozen mix.

*the cubes can be a bit tricky to get out of the tray.  I had to fill the sink with hot water, quickly and dunk the bottom of the tray before they slid out easily!

I was having a really hard time spelling today.  Here's a few gems that I typed out.  My brain is on a slow roll out today.  Guess that's what happens when your daughter wakes up at 4:30!  Thank goodness for spell check and editing.

    storebot - store bought

    picher - pitcher

accidente - accident (too much Spanish homework)

    shugar- sugar

    vary - very

    repluar - regular

Finally, if you're looking for a slightly more WT (white trash) version of the margarita head over to my friend Jen's blog.

  • Arthur: A Short Film by John Jacobsen

I little while back I attended the private screening of Arthur, a short film directed by John Jacobsen.  First, a couple words about John...  John is an elegant, inspiring, humorous, hardworking, lovely, creative man who's "always live well" motto in life has inspired me in my life and travels.  He was my acting coach from the time I was 18 until I moved to Los Angeles at 22.  He really taught me the foundation of my acting technique that I use for every audition, scene and role I encounter. When I saw that John had directed a short film and was holding a screening, I was excited to see what he had put together.  Here are the notes I jotted down during the nine minute short film: saturated, gorgeous depth of field, magical, Where the Wild Things Are, threatening, lonliness filled by imagination, complex, surprising.  That's a lot of adjectives for one lil' movie!  I don't want to say much about the film itself because it would be easy to give it all away.  Arthur is screnning this weekend at the Seattle International Film Festival.  If you're in Seattle you really should attend!  It will be showing on Sunday, May 29, 2011 at 1:30pm as a part of In Extremis, a collection of six short films about "life on-or over-the edge".  If you attend, please come back and tell me what you thought!

  • Wonderful Weekend: Mom's Birthday Party

This weekend was so much fun!  I spent the long weekend in Seattle with my family celebrating our Mom's birthday!  Poor Kyle had to stay behind to study and work again so it was just me and Gigi.

    Saturday:

He helped us get on the road Saturday morning.  Bye Honey. We looooove you.

I was sitting in traffic for a long...

    long...

    long time.

Since I was stopped along I5 (that's "the 5" for you Californians), I took a nice photo of this classic Seattle building for you.  You're welcome.

Finally relaxing at Meghan and Rob's house!

    Sunday:

Gigi woke up super early on Sunday.

We went to Edmonds to take Danelle (who is also from Seattle and was there this weekend) out for a little coffee, fresh air and snuggle time because we love her!

Then, we went to visit Great Grandpa and had a nice long visit with him talking about our ancestry.  Grandpa is a wealth of knowledge about our families.  I love spending time with him... he always has hot cocoa and cookies.

Meghan and I went to run a couple of errands with Baby G.  I dropped of a bunch of photo prints for my friend at his restaurant (La Isla) and we ran to the store.  As we were heading into the store we suddenly realized that Gigi had exceeded the capacity of her diaper.  Luckily, I always have a change of clothes with me!  Meghan (the best Aunt ever) helped me change her in the back of the car.  While we were standing there we got dive bombed by three mallards.  Yes, seriously.  We had to duck!  Get it!

After the diaper and the ducks we needed a lil' drink.  Rob whipped up these yummy grapefruit/vodka cocktails!

    Monday:

I rallied the troops first thing on Monday morning to go for a long walk to the Honore Artisan Bakery in Ballard.  Our brother loves it and I've been wanting to go forever.  We walked all the way there and...

    They were closed.

    I was really, really sad.

Rob was about to give up hope but we started walking in search of better things.  All we found was...

    a lawnmower collection...

    nobody home at Ryan's house...

and a shaved cat!!!  We admitted defeat and went home where Rob made us a yummy breakfast.  Then it was time to get ready for Mom's birthday party!!!

Meghan braided my hair like she used to when we were little.  (Yes, I'm wearing Gigi's Baby Legs on my arms)

We made two rhubarb, strawberry, apple crisps...

while Gigi used Uncle Rob as a teething toy.

    Lovely flowers from the garden.

Mom (the birthday girl) arrived early for some extra baby time.

Meghan made Mom a special drink with lime juice and Corona in salted glass that she had loved when she visited Megs in Mexico.

Everyone enjoyed the sun and the BBQ.

    Look how BIG she's getting!

It was such a nice party.  Happy Birthday Mom!  We love you!

After everyone left, it was just us cuddled up on the couch...

    Tuesday:

We got up this morning and scurried out the door.  We made a quick coffee stop and...

we were ready to hit the road. Gigi slept nearly the whole way back and didn't cry at all!  Phew.  The ride up was a bit rough so this was a huge relief.

Happy to be home with Dad!
