Freshly Picked Moccassins

freshly picked moccasinsfreshly picked moccasinsfreshly picked moccasinsfreshly picked moccasinsfreshly picked moccasins

How sweet are these little moccassins from Freshly Picked? Susan, the wonderful mom and owner, sent these adorable shoes over for Gigi and a pair for Lulu too! It was so, so thoughtful of her. I love supporting businesses run by moms, and Susan is such a great woman. Gigi hasn't taken her moccasins off since they arrived and they're so easy to put on... a total bonus these days! I can't wait until that tiny pair fits Lulu too. I love them!

Thank you, Susan. We adore them.

*Yes, Gigi dressed herself.

Spring 2012 Ready-to-Wear

I LOVE fashion week, be it in New York, London or Paris, I can't wait until the shows wrap up.  I curl up with a cup of tea and scan through the shows on Style.com.  I love that moment when I see something that literally makes me catch my breath.  There's something so rich and fabulous about these fashion shows.  Maybe someday I'll attend one...  In the meantime I'm sharing my favorites with you from the comfort of my armchair rather than the front row.  For the Spring 2012 RTW shows I loved...

The easy looks at 3.1 Phillip Lim.

The feminine lines at Alexander McQueen.

The modest, girly touches at Band of Outsiders.

The unexpected details at Carolina Herrera.

The military inspiration and geometic shapes (and the shoes) at Chanel.

The crisp whites and high hemlines at Chloe.

The fabulous, colorful skirts and nuetral tops at Christian Siriano.

The sheer dresses at Christian Dior.

The glossy textures at Givenchy.

The laid back seperates at Isabel Marant.

The pink skirts at Jason Wu.

The gothic modern dresses at Lanvin.

The extreme lovliness at Marchesa.

The chic sportswear and color blocking at Marc by Marc Jacobs.

The modern florals at Nina Ricci.

The breathtaking dresses at Oscar de la Renta.

The contrasting looks at Pringle.

The Great Gatsby inspired looks at Ralph Lauren (he did the costumes for the 1974 film).

The crazy creativity at Rodarte.

The completely unexpected as Stella McCartney.

The hot pinks at Valentino (didn't see that coming).

The soft flowing fabric at Vera Wang.

The stunning, glamorous dresses at Zac Posen.

That's all for this round of shows.  Hope you enjoyed a glance at my favorite looks from the Spring 2012 lines and I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

F-F-F-Fashion (Fall 2011 RTW: Part 3)

Here's the final chapter of my Fall Ready-to-Wear posts.  Hope you enjoyed all the lovely looks.

Micheal Kors

I'm not normally a Micheal Kors fan, it's a little too trophy wife for me most of the time, but I found this collection really alluring and fresh.

Oscar de la Renta

Gorgeous!

Proenza Schouler

Hernandez and McCollough always come up with such fantastic, unique pieces!

Nina Ricci

I love the shilloettes and the color palette.

Rag and Bone

Super cool.

I am consistently impressed with the work that Kate and Laura Mulleavy are sending down the runway.  They are visionaries!

Roland Mouret

Soft, feminine, strong and masculine.  I love it!

Stella McCartney

Interesting proportions and styling.

Valentino

This collection is so buttoned up but it's somehow incredibly sexy and alluring.

Vera Wang

Such a great use of sheer.

Vivienne Westwood

Westwood is so cooky!  But, she's also a fantastic designer.

Zac Posen

Posen makes such beautiful dresses.

F-F-F-Fashion (Fall 2011 RTW: Part 1)

It's a dreary, grey Friday and I just got home from a dentist appointment.  I had to get two cavities filled despite the fact that I am insane about my teeth.  Apparently cativies are a common "side effect" of pregnancy... something about your body being more acidic.  So, what else is there to do when your face is half-numb than to come home and drool (literally) over the various Fall 2011 Ready-to-Wear collections that paraded down the runways from New York to Paris?  I had sooo many favorites this time I had to break the posts up into three posts.  All the images are from Style.com.  Enjoy!

Alexander McQueen

Lee McQueen has been gone for a year now but Sarah Burton is keeping his design astetich alive and thriving.  Beautiful.  Dark.  Romantic.  Very McQueen.

Alexander Wang

Cool.

Balmain

They sure know how to do short hemlines over at Balmain.  Guess I'll need to shave my legs before next fall.  I love this collection.  It's sexy, simple and super cool.

BCBG Max Azria

Very unique.  I love the range of colors.

Band of Outsiders

These clothes seem very Pacific Northwest to me.

Burberry Prorsum

I love this collection by Christopher Bailey.  Very classy clothes.

Carolina Herrera

Ladylike and elegant, as usual.  I love a belted dress!

Chloé

There were such contrasting, chic looks in this line.

Christain Dior

I know... John Galliano is in hot water right now for some anti-semetic remarks he made while drunk in a bar in Paris.  But, if you can separate the man from the art, this collection is gorgeous.  I think it's amazing.

Derek Lam

His dresses are so great!  Perfect Sportswear.

I'll post Part 2 next week!

Stella McCartney Kids Line

Stella McCartney is one of my very favorite designers.  She did a kids line for Gap Kids last year which featured adorable little clothes!  It was limited edition and was gone quickly.

After the success of the Gap line, she decided to begin her own line of kids clothing!  Her website is newly launched with the collection.  The collection features clothing for kids ages 0-12 but are derived (and shrunken down) from her main lain.  The overall aesthetic is sweet and modern. This first collection is for Holiday 2010 with a Spring-Summer 2011 Collection coming soon.

Here are some of my favorite looks for kiddos from her line:

I won't be purchasing any of these adorable outfits any time soon because they are way outside of my kids clothing budget (not to mention my own clothing budget) but they are fun to look at!  This little video featuring the clothing is really cute!

Paris Fashion Week!

I love Paris and I love fashion!  So.... when the two are combined for Paris Fashion Week there's a lot of love happening on my end (although I am sure Paris loves me back).  Here are some of my favorite looks from my favorite designer's Spring 2011 Ready-to-Wear Collections debuted at Paris Fashion week! All of the images are from www.Style.com!  You can check out these complete collections and others on their website (which I also love)!

Balmain

I loved the edgy minimilistic pieces that designer Christophe Decarnin sent down the runway.

Chanel

Chanel is always a favorite of mine.  It's so ladylike!

Chloe

Minimalistic and simple.  I love the nude dresses!

Christian Dior

Leave it up to John Galliano to send these somewhat crazy/somehow perfect ensembles down the runway!

Lanvin

This was a gorgeous collection by Alber Elbaz.  He is consistently one of my favorite designers!

Nina Ricci

I loved the romanticism displayed in this collection.

Rochas

I loved this whole collection!!!  Yes, most of it (if not all of it) looks like really expensive sleepwear, but it's soooo beautiful!

Roland Mouret

So classic and simple with perfect construction.

Stella McCartney

Stella is definitely my favorite designer.  Her ability to produce collection after collection of perfectly chic, simple clothes is unmatched.

Alexander McQueen

This was Sarah Burton's first collection after taking over for desinger Lee McQueen after his death in February.  She did a fantastic job maintaining his level of theatricality while softening the edge a bit with her own aesthetic.  Gorgeous.

Zac Posen

This whole collection looked like it could be a modern wardrobe for The Great Gatsby!  *Sigh*

The Row

Who knew the Olsen twins would turn out to be such great designers!

Emanuel Ungaro

Simple and yet totally unique.  I mostly loved the Alice in Wonderland setting.

Valentino

Feminine, simple, flattering.

Yves Saint Laurent

I have to admit that I am sometimes bored with the looks that come out of this fashion house... but, this time there was just enough surprise to keep me tuned in and enough simplicity to make me love it!

Phase 7: The Wish List

Phase 7:

This is the final phase (for now) of my style makeover.  First I set my goals, then I analyzed my style, then I used Closet Couture to organize my clothes visually, then I did the actual organization and sorting, then I took a trip down memory lane to revisit stylish moments of my past and then I designed a uniform that works for my life and style... Now I have created a wish list of items to help complete the makeover.  I hope, in some way, that this has been inspiring or entertaining to read about!

By creating a complete list of items I would love to add to my wardrobe, I have a limited and comprehensive list of things I want.  This will help keep me on track to fill out and complete my wardrobe without buying anything unnecessary.  This will help me to determine if it's really something that will help attain the "completed wardrobe" or if it will be just another item that I don't need.  Naturally, as with all of this style makeover, this may seem a bit obsessive and over the top, but it was fun to make and I hope it will prove useful...I've recently gotten to cross off a couple of items so I left them on to show the idea!

I have printed this out (without the photos and in very small font) and keep a copy folded up in my wallet.  Now when I go shopping (which isn’t often) I have this list to help me determine if I’m agonizing over something I want or “need”.  In other words, I hope that the time spent making this list will help me make great purchase choices, save money and build a wardrobe that I love!

*’s indicate items that will allow me to complete outfits with clothes that I already have

Louis Vuitton

I’m not normally a huge fan of Louis Vuitton’s collections, but this time around...I’m in love.  Designer Marc Jacobs completely impressed me.  I couldn’t help but become enamored with the newly released images from their Fall 2010 campaign.  The 1950’s styling, the lighting and the composition just blew me away. The campaign was shot by Steven Meisel and features Christy Turlington, Natalia Vodianova and Karen Elson. The models ages range from 20-40 and they all look sophisticated and stunning.

Phase 6: Creating a Uniform

Phase 6:

So, I'm getting back on track with my style makeover.  Between my trip to L.A. and wrapping up this quarter's school work I got a bit sidetracked!

Creating a Uniform:

Step 1: Finding the Common Denominator (yes, that’s right I used a math word...that’s the last you’ll see of that for years to come!)

I spent some time looking over my style goal images from Phase 2... http://acollectionofpassions.blogspot.com/2010/03/phase-2-style-analysis.html

...my own images from my virtual closet...

 http://www.closetcouture.com/members/kmcmackin/?hl=

...and my images from the times I felt the most stylish... http://acollectionofpassions.blogspot.com/2010/04/trip-down-memory-lane.html

What I found was that the things I was drawn to were repeated over and over again in some variation of:

-tomboy hats

-tanks, t-shirts, tunics or dresses

-simple jackets/blazers/sweaters

-jeans, tights or leggings

-boots, sandals or ballet flats, cute heels

-simple accessories

I am occasionally drawn to crazy things like:

But, since I’m slowly nearing thirty and don’t have loads of money to spend on ridiculous shoes, I think it wise to focus on a basic wardrobe that I will be able to utilize for the next decade not just the next season! ;-)

By sticking with simple and mix/matchable tops and bottoms I will be able to slowly build a "uniform" of comfortable and cute clothes that can be worn in any combination.  As I solidify my “uniform” and add pieces to it, I’ll be able to build a closet full of clothes that are easy to style, wear and make me feel good.  Isn’t that the point of fashion after-all? It’s kind of like that children’s puzzle with the bear cut into three pieces...

... and you can swap out the tops and bottoms to create a seemingly endless number of clothing choices.  Narrowing down my style into this simple “uniform” will help me to figure out what’s missing from my wardrobe.  Which, in turn, will allow me to shop smartly (clearly I don’t need any v-neck long-sleeve t-shirts from The Gap) and to wear more things in my closet.  I will be able to use Closet Couture (which has turned out to be a great investment of three hours) to create my outfits  ahead of time and pull them out the night before, thus creating an enjoyable system for simple dressing!

Next Week: Phase 7:  My Wish List (and the final Phase of this project...for now)!

Phase 5: A Trip Down Memory Lane

Phase 5:

It’s time in my style overhaul to reflect a bit on when and where I feel the most stylish.

Childhood:
It’s not that I was particularly stylish as a kid. But, I certainly didn’t care what anyone thought about my appearance.  I wore different colored socks everyday, costume jewelry to the grocery store, princess dresses to school.  Sometime in junior high, I lost that sense of creativity.

(Ready to head to school....and the same dress styled up with a tutu and a ponytail? I must have thought my hair was longer than it was.)

(My favorite dress...actually a wedding dress made up small for me by a family friend.)

(Sporting a daisy crown on my Nana's farm.)

(Costume jewelry and pumpkin shopping.)

Tres Chic:
When I was in Paris recently, I made the bold choice to pack only clothes that I wanted to wear and wasn’t motivated to put on at home. My husband thought I was insane to pack this way but I was determined to mix it up! It’s Paris afterall!  So I packed my one suitcase and off we went.  Somehow, in spite of the fact that my jeans had a last minute aversion to the trip and ended up staying in Seattle, I managed to pull together new, fun outfits during my vacation.  I felt prettyand chic and energetic every day.  Because I had limited choices, it was easy and fun to get dressed and I put on things (hello, leggings and a tank top!) that I hadn’t dreamed of wearing at home!

  (At L'Affriole for dinner.)

(Taking the Metro home from dinner. (Hoodie (Prairie Underground), leggings (LAMade), shoes (Frye))

(Walking to the Musée Rodin from the Musée d'Orsay. (Camisole (Odd Molly), leggings (LAMade), boots (Frye))

Having lunch at Buoillon Racine. (Dress (LAMade...it's made out of organic bamboo), sunglasses (Versace))

The Hollywood Effect:
When I find myself in L.A. for a week of auditions, meetings and Porn Star Karaoke I am often dressed in my finest ingenue outfits. Sweet dresses and espadrilles, skinny jeans and great shoes...and I’ll tell you what I’m not wearing...sweatpants! It’s fun to get dressed up and go onto a studio lot for an audition, to lunch or a meeting.  It’s part of the excitement.

Dress (Anthropologie), clutch (Tano), shoes (Corso Como)

Dress (Jean Paul Gaultier for Target), Gladiator sandals (Frye)
 Hmmm...

What do these three things have in common?  They are all not part of the “day to day”.  The consistent element is the newness of the situation, the break in the routine.  As a child I just did, in Paris I had fun and in L.A. I dress the part.  The beauty of it is that I did it with the clothes that are hanging in my closet now!  No shopping spree needed.

So...
How do I translate this vacation motivation into my everyday routine?
I am intrigued about the idea of creating a uniform, some basic outfits that allow me to throw on clothes in the morning that make me feel good (rather than frumpy) and utilizes my wardrobe in acreative and fun way!

Next week: Phase 6: Creating a Uniform!

Phase 3: The Cold Hard Facts

My side of the closet...nothing fancy but at least it's organized now!

Phase 4:

The Result: The task of photographing and uploading my tangible closet into a virtual closet wasn’t actually as tedious as I thought it would be.  It took a few hours and now I’m done!  As I purchase new items I will need to add them to my existing virtual wardrobe but for now I just organize my images.

I go through my closet a few times a year in the hopes of weeding out the old and unworn, but this usually results in a small bag of items to give away (some of which I usually pull out of the bag and return to my closet, vowing to wear said items more in the future).  I was hoping that by sorting through my closet as a set of images I would be able to see my clothes differently and I was not disappointed. Looking through the images made it easier to see what I had, what I wear all the time and....well, I discovered some embarrassing things...

The Cold Hard Facts...

Total items: 208

Worn regularly: 54
The items I wear regularly are mostly cotton t-shirts and tanks, cotton dresses, one pair of jeans, black leggings, and a few warm coats.  Basic, simple, comfortable.

Worn rarely: 45
The items I wear rarely are mostly things that I love but am afraid to ruin (very silly-must change this attitude immediately), a few seasonal pieces and a few things that I don’t even like.

Worn 1, 2 or 3 times: 109!!!
What?!? That’s half my wardrobe and I never wear it.  Obviously!  I’m too busy wearing old t shirts and jeans.

After going through my closet piece by piece and getting rid of things that I know I won’t wear, things that don’t quite fit right or feel good on and the things I don’t really like (duh), I made quite a dent.

Total Ditched and Deleted: 24
New Total: 184

You can check out my Closet Couture profile:
http://www.closetcouture.com/members/kmcmackin/?hl=

*Sigh*...It felt so good to get rid of the items in my closet that were just sitting there!  As a broke student/artist it is really hard to get rid of something even if I don’t wear it.  I don’t exactly have the funds to go out and replace it but, as a result, I have held onto a lot of clothes that I don’t feel good in, aren’t my style or don’t really fit! These clothes are great items for a Naked Lady Party, to donate to Goodwill, to take to a consignment shop or to pass on to another broke friend who might actually like them!

Also, I got two boxes of velvet hangers from (50 Qty. each) and they have completely transformed my side of the closet! They have them at Costco and also for sale on Amazon.com (see my link under Favorite Things tab to the right). They're inexpensive and really effective.

Now that my closet is organized and my "work is done" I promise lots of fun stuff in the future! I know the last few posts have been a little "style clinical" but my hope is that someone out there might be inspired to go along this style discovery path with me. I don't know about you, but every time I see a movie makeover (Pretty WomanSabrinaThe Devil Wear's PradaMrs. Doubtfire, etc.) where some slightly un-styled ingenue is transformed, in under fifteen minutes, into a chic stylish lady, or read an article in Vogue about some socialites style overhaul, I always get a little inspired...and then annoyed!  I don't have tons of money lying around, Gary Marshall's stylists or the Vogue accessories closet to tap into.  So, I'm attempting to do it on my own!

Next week: A trip down memory lane in the name of style inspiration!

Phase 3: Closet Couture

Article about Closet Couture in Vogue
Link to full article:
http://www.vogue.com/voguedaily/2009/04/web-design/

Phase 3:

The Goal: Find a way to organize my closet.

I recently read about Closet Couture in Vogue magazine.  The idea behind Closet Couture's website (www.closetcouture.com) is that you photograph and upload your Chanel individual clothing items onto their site where you create a virtual version of your wardrobe. Once you've uploaded your clothes to their site, you can:
1) Put together outfits from your closet onto a virtual mannequin which I hope will make it easier to pre-plan outfits and make me less likely to throw on the same old boring outfit.
2) Make a packing list for a trip (much easier than sorting through clothes on your bed only to arrive at your destination and realize that you forgot underwear or pajamas).
3) Interact with other members (like Facebook) and shop (I will not be participating in these last two activities).

In other words, Closet Couture=Cher’s Clueless closet come to life thanks to technology and wireless internet.

Cher in Clueless

The Task: I am setting out to photograph each and every clothing item, accessory and shoe in my messy closet.  I am afraid this step is going to be tedious and I'm not really looking forward to it...but, I am really hoping that by uploading the images of my clothes, I will be able to see them in a different way, organize them, really assess my clothes and get excited about getting dressed each day.  I don't know if it will work, but I do know that I am stuck in a rut wearing the same thing over and over again (jeans and t-shirts mostly) and if it does work, it will make dressing stylishly simple and fun.  Wish me luck!

I'd love to hear your opinions on this!  Has anyone out there used Closet Couture, or have any other fun ideas for this style-overhaul?

Next week: Phase 4: The Result

Phase 2: Style Analysis

Phase 2:

Step 1: Do a little personal style analysis.

Use adjectives to define my style now.
Now: Basic, functional, comfortable.

Use adjectives to define what I would like my style to be.
Future: Comfortable, chic, experimental/fun, tomboyish and antique feminine.

Step 2: Find images that highlight what how I’d like to dress and find the patterns:

Comfortable:

Patterns: Simple dresses/tunics, belts.  Jeans with boots.

Chic:

Patterns: Blazers. Menswear. Feminine, classic skirts.

Experimental/Fun:

Patterns: Comfortable but fun. Not too over the top.

Tomboyish:

Patterns: Menswear accessories.  Feminine lines.

Antique Feminine:

Patterns: Comfortable, flowing, feminine dresses.

By filtering through images and finding that I'm drawn to similar looks over and over again, I am slowly figuring out what I like and what the patterns are.
Next week: Phase 3: Out with the Old (a.k.a. tackling the closet)

Images for this post were pulled from various magazines and www.people.com

Personal Style Kick-Off

Marlene Dietrich (left), Audrey Hepburn (center) and Grace Kelly (right)

Personal style is a fun way to express yourself on a daily basis. You get up, look through your closet full of clothes and decide what wardrobe choices will make you feel good today. If only it was that easy!

The truth is, very few people have the luxury of getting up and sifting through their closet to find the outfit of the day.  Most of us get up and get dressed while brushing our teeth and trying to resist the urge to pull on something that closely resembles the pajamas we’ve just removed. When it's time to go out and do something different or special I can clean up quite nicely, but in the regular day to day, I lack the skill for simple style.

Phase 1: What do I want?

My goal is to make dressing stylishly easy, or at least easier, on a daily basis.

I want to feel pretty, sexy and comfortable!  Also, I want my husband to come home and think I look pretty, sexy and comfortable. Although my fantastic husband claims I look great all the time, I don’t want to look like I don’t care...and I suspect he’s lying just a touch.  But, I don’t have all the time in the world to pull it together each morning and I usually end up with my hair pulled back, a small dash of makeup on, wearing jeans and a simple t-shirt or sweater.  I'm definitely in a style slump and I rarely feel pretty. So I am sitting here (in my bathrobe) and trying to think of a way to live more stylishly without creating goals I can’t meet.

Next week I will return with Phase 2: Style Goals

The September Issue

Vogue’s September 2007 issue.  (Mario Testino/Vogue)

For months I have been looking forward to watching The September Issue so when it became available on DVD I immediately got myself a copy, poured myself a glass of wine and sat down to absorb it.  The September Issue follows Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine, as she works with her team to put together the most important issue of the year.  The documentary is vibrant, full of energy, funny and fascinating.   Anna and her team are remarkable.  I especially enjoyed watching Grace Coddington, Vogue’s creative director, go head to head with Anna over her infamously sharp and unforgiving decisions.  Meryl Streep's depiction of Anna Wintour in The Devil Wears Prada isn’t entirely off mark, but overall I found Anna Wintour much more accessible and easier to understand than her film character counterpart.  She is an incredibly hardworking woman who month after month turns out the best fashion magazine in the country.  The real highlight for me was getting to watch how Mario Testino (my favorite photographer) works as he shot the cover and spread featuring Sienna Miller.  I throughly enjoyed this documentary and regardless of your interest in fashion, it’s worth watching how things work behind the scenes of this incredible industry.

McQueen

Designs from Alexander McQueen's Fall 2008 Collection (Style.com)

It’s been one week since designer Lee McQueen passed away. As the creator of the fashion line Alexander McQueen his tragic death is a significant loss to the fashion world, but also to the artistic world. He was a visionary artist who used his designs to express his emotions. His work was clear, raw, extravagant, theatrical and original. After his friend and mentor Isabella Blow committed suicide in 2007, McQueen’s work entered a very dark period. But his Fall 2008 collection began to show light and promise again. His collection focused on beautiful feathery dresses and as his light ballerina-like models floated down the catwalks in his designs you could tell that it was a new beginning for McQueen. He titled that production The Girl Who Lived in the Tree and based his designs on a tale of his own creation about freedom and hope. In various interviews last year, McQueen talked about his work on positive thinking and the transformation he had undergone. He will be missed.
