Bath Time

At the end of the day, even on the harder days, I love giving Gwyneth her bath. In fact, I look forward to it all day long. When she climbs into that warm water she becomes the silliest baby, bursting with giggles. It's a time for me to really be in the moment. I try to take it all in... the way her hair looks, the smell of the baby soap, how tiny her little shoulder blades are... For some reason, during bath time, I'm always so aware that another day is done and it's going by way too quickly.

Boy, do I love her to pieces.

Also, I'm pretty sure the majority of her hydration for the day comes from drinking bathwater. C'est la vie.

I hope you all have a great weekend... Kyle had shoulder surgery yesterday so we're going our best around here to keep everyone comfortable, rested, fed, and happy. Looks like it might be a queit weekend for us.

Family Time in Seattle

Woodland Park Zoo Bears
We are having a great time in Seattle. We've gotten to have dinners with family and friends, we went to the zoo with Nan (Gwyneth's special Grandma), and I even made it out for a little clothes shopping trip, and salsa dancing with Marion!

We are staying with my sister and her husband, Rob, and helping them prepare for their baby's arrival by cooking up a storm. So far we've made two big pans of Tuna Noodle Casserole, and two of lasagna, turkey burger patties, and chocolate chip cookie dough. Still on the list are wontons, key lime pies, meatloaf, and a couple other things. They'll have a full freezer just in time.

Can you believe that photo from the zoo? That bear was about three feet away and I'm pretty sure he was eying Gwynnie's baby food pouch. She kept saying, "Woof Woof!" Silly baby.

Daddy Love

Gwyneth and I are leaving again... this time we're heading up to Seattle to attend my sister's baby shower. Then, we'll be spending the week at her place. I'm planning to spend lots of time with my brother, Ryan, before he moves to Sweden! Kyle will join us the following weekend because Ryan's band, The Maldives, is having a CD release party at the Tractor Tavern. It's also Kyle's Nana's 85th birthday so we'll be celebrating with her. While I'm looking forward to the time in Seattle, it's hard to leave Kyle again. Gwyneth is head over heels in love with her Daddy, and the feeling's mutual. You should see the way Gwyneth's face lights up when she see's her "DaDaDADA". She just adores him. We'll be counting down the days until he joins us!

Classic Board Books - Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, Alice in Wonderland, Romeo and Juliet

Just before we left for LA, I found these classic board books at our local Book Stop. They had been tricky to track down so, as soon as I saw them, I snapped them up. They have quickly become Gwyneth's favorite "booooo"s. She loves to look at them and can frequently be found with them all in a row, flipping through the colorful pages. I love all of them, though I have to admit, Pride and Prejudice is my favorite... afterall one of Gwyneth's middle names is Bennet! I have read all these classics many times over, so it's wonderful to get to begin sharing them with her.

This is the moment she realized that Darcy and Lizzy really love each other and were just being prideful and foolish! Classic reaction. We're going to start our own bookclub where we discuss the ins and outs of Pride and Prejudice forever.

Since I posted a photo of them on Instagram, lots of my blogger friends have had me get copies for them as well. Cynthia at the Book Stop has been great about ordering and shipping them out to people. You can order them through their website or just give her a call! It's great to support our favorite local book store!

A Day Off

chai 10 speed coffee hood riverGywneth Hug

This morning I woke up full of plans to get everything done. I made the decision to go to school full-time this quarter so I can wrap up that chapter of my life. I feel a little crazy over here at times. I love this blog and my foodie website and I'm so thrilled about all the great oppurunities their bringing into my life. I'm staying busy with my photography business, and I've started working with Double Mountain (where Kyle is a brewer) doing some social media work.

With all of that great work, and school full time, I just sometimes feel like I'm not being the best mom. There's been not enough book reading, and park visiting... and way too much Winnie the Pooh (which she now asks for: "wiinneee-a-poooooh?") and way too much "Hold on one second, honey". Next week is midterms and I then I'm halfway there! Only 6 more weeks of school, then I can focus on all the projects that are near and dear to me (including being a more attentive mama).

Anyway... like I was saying, today I woke up with a big list. But we were all cuddling in bed and Gwyneth took Kyle's hand, and mine and said, "GO?" while nodding vigorously. So... we went. We walked to the coffee shop, got lattes and amazing Strawberry Rhubarb Scones. Then I walked home and took an hour to work out, which I haven't done in a while (more on this later). Then I took a shower with Gwyneth, where we sang silly songs and stayed in for way too long. Then we got ready for the day, made lunch, and before I knew it... I had decided to take the whole day off!!!

No work for me today. I'm doing laundry and picking up, hanging out with Gwyneth, cuddling lots, I finished a good book, and will maybe start another. It's raining and I'm just enjoying not forcing myself to power through homework. It will mean an extra crazy day for me tomorrow to wrap up the week, but I needed a break! What do you do to decompress (I could use the suggestions)?

Potty Training a One Year Old

Potty Training 1 year oldPotty Training 1 year oldGwyneth is now almost 16 months old, but when she turned one I (half-jokingly) told a mom of five I know, that I was going to come to her when it was time for potty training. She told me, "Start now. Just start putting Gwyneth on the potty before baths or at diaper change times to get her used to the idea." I know for a lot of mom's they run into a big issue with potty training because their tykes are frightened of the toilet, so it seemed logical to me to introduce her to it before it would occur to her to be scared.

I ordered a Baby Bjorn Toilet Trainer potty seat for her and started setting her on the toilet for a few minutes every night while I got her bath ready. The seat works great and I've been really happy with it. She's seems really comfortable on it. She went pee while perched there once or twice but it was most likely a coincidence (which we made a HUGE deal out of). Then, when we went to California the project got put on hold. But she was with me 24/7, including on trips to the bathroom. I showed her how "Mommy goes potty" but didn't think it was really sinking in until... we got home and she started going to the bathroom on the potty!

Potty Training baby bjorn toilet trainer potty seat review

It's now been more than a week since I've changed a poopy diaper! I am still kind of shocked. I really didn't expect for her to figure it out so quickly. Since it was so obvious that she was trying and succeeding at using the toilet we've really ramped up our training. I watch (and listen) for signs that she may need to use the toilet (usually she's very quiet or very.. uh, gassy) and we try to make it really fun. If she says/signs "all done" we get her down right away so it doesn't feel like something she has to do.

We also have a great book pop-up called Princess Potty Time (there's a version for Superheros too) that my Dad and Stepmom got for her. I also have a couple less interactive books like Curious George Visits the Zoo, and I just take time talking about the different animals (as opposed to reading the story in an animated way). She seems to be able to focus better when it's not too interactive or animated. She likes to hold the book at first but then when she's ready to go, she hands it off to me and I show her the pictures while she goes.

Princess Potty Time Potty Training one year oldsuperhero potty time potty training one year oldcurious george visits the zoo

When she successfully uses the toilet I give her one square of toilet paper (which is the most thrilling thing ever) and she gets to "wipe" then throw it in the potty. I quickly flush the toilet, and I try not to let her see how it's done (I don't need her continuously trying to flush). Then she claps for her self and cheers, "Day! Day! Bye bye poo poo!" I only give her the toilet paper and only flush when she goes because I want her to learn that those are rewards, otherwise I'm afraid she'd just say "all done" to get to the fun stuff without actually going potty. This week I'm planning to make her a "Star Chart" that she can put a sticker on when she uses the toilet successfully.

Gwyneth is still wearing her BumGenius 4.0 diapers all the time and while she does occasionally pee in the potty, her diapers are usually really wet. Where we're having the most success is with pooping in the potty. Those signs are easy for me to see. This toilet training business happened so naturally for her. It takes awareness, time, and patience from us but it's so worth it. I'm ridiculously proud of her.

I'm by no means an expert on this process. I'd love any advice, or tips you want to share! Every kid is different and everyone finds their own methods that work for them. I'll keep you up to date on how the process continues to go, and what's working for us.

Beach Baby

One of my favorite things from our trip to California was taking Gwyneth to see the ocean (which of course involved a lot of sunscreen and an adorable swimsuit). I was surprised by how much she absolutely LOVED the ocean. Poppy and her family met Steph and me at the beach just North of Solana. Poppy helped me walk Gwyneth down to the water and as each wave cold came and splashed up over their feet, both girls were in fits of giggles. It was awesome. I'm pretty sure Gwyneth wanted to ditch me and run straight into the waves.

Our Trip to California

Me and GwynethHappy Gwyneth
Gwyneth and I had a wonderful trip to California. Gwyn makes a great little travel companion and I really loved this time with her.

The main thing I discovered on this trip was that we really have some wonderful friends in California. It is really amazing when your friends open their homes up to you and your silly, squirrelly, sometimes-tantrum-throwing, one year old. It meant so much to me to be welcomed into our friends' houses for a night, a week, a cup of coffee, or a shared meal. Everyone was so excited to meet Gwyneth and loved her so much. We are very happy to be home but are already missing all of our wonderful CA friends.

Here are a few of my favorite photos from our trip...
Gwyneth Deborah Dion
Gwyneth with Hadley and Deborah. Gwyneth and I went over to visit Deborah and Co. twice, once to cook dinner for them and once for coffee. I wish we could have spent even more time with this lovely family.

Whitney Johnson blogger with Gwyneth
We met up with Whitney of Eat Sleep Cuddle for lunch on our way from San Diego back to LA. I really love her blog and it was so nice getting to meet her, I only wished we lived closer so we could cook and eat together all the time!

Stephanie Harrison Lucia
We spent almost a whole week in San Diego with Steph and Andy and their kiddos, Harrison and Lucia. Steph and I are so similar and every time I get to see her I just feel completely understood, fulfilled, and loved. She's a great friend.
Gwyneth Harrison hug
There's also this little blossoming romance.

San Diego Zoo
We spent a great day with Steph and Co. at the San Diego Zoo. I have wanted to go to the San Diego Zoo ever since I was a little girl. I wanted to either be a zoologist or an actress and was obsessed with a promotional CD/game from the San Diego Zoo. It was a blast with the kids. It was one of those perfect days where not one of them cried and everyone was happy.

(In case you were wondering, Gwyneth is licking the flamingo fence in the photo on the right. It's good for her immune system, right?)

We stayed with Tara and Cole for the majority of our time in LA. They were so welcoming, accommodating, and loving. Gwyneth loved playing with them, and I loved having helping hands. They were amazing. They even babysat for me while I went and visited the film set of one of my favorite directors for half a day.

We did a lot together: trip to Venice beach, lunches and dinners out, a morning at The Getty Center to see the Herb Ritts exhibition, and Tara and Cole took the time to put together a sweet Easter basket for G too!

Gwyneth and Romi Dames
We also got to visit with our lovely friend Romi Dames (a very talented actress), my wonderful agent Carlyne and her daughter Joell, our friend/casting director Rene, our friend Karman, and our friend Darren. It was two weeks packed full of friends.

We had so much fun together on this trip. Gwyneth is a total California baby!

A Few Thoughts on Traveling with a One Year Old

Gwyneth suitcase
This trip has been really fun so far. Gwynnie and I are getting ready to head down to San Diego to visit our friends, Steph and Andy. This first part of the trip has been wonderful but has involved a lot of juggling and visiting lots friends. I'll do a more detailed post on all our busy activities when we get settled in San Diego.

I have learned on this trip that having flexible expectations is key. I thought I'd have time to settle down and work, to watch movies, go to the beach, have picnics at parks, to read, etc. But traveling with a 15 month old is kind of a goose-chase. I've been staying the last couple of nights with Tara` and Cole. Tara has been a nanny for years so she totally gets it and has been just wonderful! She's helped me baby wrangle here at their apartment, and out at meals which has meant I can breathe and finish my sentences. You don't realize how squirrelly a one year old is until you travel with them by yourself!

I'm amazed at how much we've done in the past few days and how much fun I've been having with my little sidekick. She's been a trooper with all the changes in location, routine, sleep habits, meal times, etc. She's a good girl.

Once we're in San Diego it'll be me and Steph hanging out during the days while our three little ones play quietly together and nap in tandem, and all sleep through the night. Right?

Gwyneth is Walking!

Gwyneth and NanaGwyneth Walking
This weekend my Mom (Nana) came to visit us. She spent the whole time playing with Gwyneth and encouraging her to take her first steps. By the time Sunday morning rolled around Gwyneth was walking! I can't believe we have a walking, talking little girl!

I'm spending the rest of the day packing for LA and getting everything organized. Two weeks is a long time to be on my own with Gwyn. But we are going to have a wonderful Mom and Daughter adventure. Hope you all are having a wonderful Monday.

I'm so happy it's Frida!y! Gwyneth and I are going to tidy up the house and get ready for Kyle's parents to arrive. We are really looking forward to spending a nice long weekend with them, and we may get to see my Mom and Mike too! It's going to be a wonderful weekend. Hope yours is lovely too.

Here's a little video of Gwyneth practicing walking with her little cart. I have a feeling speed-walking is in our near future.

Lunches with Daddy

Gwyneth and I love nothing more than slipping out of the house in the middle of the day to meet Kyle for lunch. We do it just about every week. Usually we just meet him at the brewery to grab a pint and a pizza. It's so fun for Gwynnie to get a chance to see her "da da da DAAAAA" in the middle of his busy day. Lunches with Daddy are one of our favorite things.

Choosing Positivity in Parenting

Cozy Girls Style File
There has been a blog post being passed around the Internet talking about motherhood. I'm not going to even link to this article because, frankly, I found it to be cynical, sarcastic, and negative.  While I understand the need to vent, I am fed up with the negative. The negativity began when we first shared with people that we were expecting...

"Enjoy these last months of sleep."
"Breastfeeding is soooo hard."
"You two are going to bicker all the time. Babies bring out the worst in your marriage."
"Say goodbye to your sex life."
"I didn't shower for like, four months after our baby was born."

Everyone warned us that doomsday was quickly approaching. All Kyle and I wanted was for one person with young kids, just one, to say to us, "Parenting is so fun! It's amazing. It's the best choice we ever made!”, without prefacing it by telling us how hard it was and how much this or that sucks. But, it was all doom and gloom and poopy diapers on the horizon, apparently.

We made a choice to ignore every negative statement that came our way, or to turn it into something positive. If people told us we were going to bicker all the time, then we devised a plan on how not to do that. If people said we would no longer have sex, then we decided we would schedule it if we had to.

The negativity continued after Gwyneth was born...
"Oh wow, she slept through the night? That won't last." ...and when it did... "You're second baby won't be like that!" Really?!

In the past year have we slept less? Are my boobs “never going to be the same"? Has our household hygiene been less stellar? Did we bicker sometimes? Have we eaten dinners of cold pasta while balancing a crying baby? Do some days just plain suck? Has it been stressful, challenging, exhausting? Of course! Everyone who decides to become a parent already knows that it will have it's challenges. Why not, for a change, share with those around you who are expecting or who are new parents how wonderful it is! Tell them about how parenting is fun, funny, amazing, perfect, magical, ridiculous, life changing, the best! Because it is.

I often feel that people discount my "Pollyanna" outlook on motherhood because I'm "not cynical yet" and I have an “easy” baby. This is always said with smile that says, "come back and talk to us when you are as bitter about motherhood as we are." I am very grateful for my life, my husband, and my baby. Sure, I’ll admit that Gwyneth is the perfect baby for us. But that doesn’t mean she doesn’t whine, cry, wake up in the middle of the night, bite, pinch, or do any of the things that every other baby does. There's a lot of work that goes on behind closed doors and it's frustrating to have that work written off as luck. Perfection is in the eye of the beholder.

Everyone assumes that because I am so happy to be a mom, rarely complain, find joy in the little things, and find humor in the hard stuff, that I have had a really easy baby and an easy transition into motherhood.  But it wasn't that easy. After Gwyneth was born, I plummeted into a state of extreme anxiety. I felt extremely nervous and unbelievably angry. I was hit with intense panic attacks, I heard voices in my head that were threatening and terrifying, I was afraid of myself, fearful of everything, I cried a lot, and my body tense with anger. After a few weeks I finally managed to say to Kyle, "I think I'm going crazy. I think I need help." Asking for help was incredibly hard. As a mother, I didn't want to need help. Luckily, I had worked with an amazing counselor in my late teens, and was able to call her for the help and support I desperately needed. I worked with her a few times a week over the phone for my first two months as a new mom. Just talking helped. Exercise helped. Fairly quickly I was able to regain my footing, and proceed with joy and intention into my role as a Gwyneth's Mom.

About a month ago I was watching an old interview with Brooke Shields on Oprah (because that's how cool I am), and she was talking in-depth about her experience with postpartum depression. As I watched, something clicked. I completely connected with some of the things she was saying. Not all of it, but a lot of it. The bizarre thing was that, I had read this when I was going through my own experience with postpartum anxiety, or depression, or whatever you want to call it. At the time, I read it and thought, how terrible... it would really suck to feel like that. It wasn't until just a month ago that I recognized myself in it. I thought that having postpartum depression meant that you didn't care for your baby, didn't feel love for them, and weren't ever happy. I was happy a lot of the time, euphoric even. I loved Gwyneth beyond anything I ever imagined, so I didn't recognize what I was experiencing. I'm so glad that there's help when you need it in the form of wonderful lactation consultants, other parents, husbands, sisters, your own parents, friends, and counselors.

The point is, it hasn't been all easy, or perfect for me. I choose to be appreciative, positive, to seize the day, and to live in the moment as much as I can. I love being reminded by sweet older ladies to enjoy it because, "It goes by so quickly". It reminds me to live each day with gratitude, even the hard ones. I love being a parent. I love having someone who needs me and relies on me. I have never had the desire to work so hard for anything in my life. Having a child has made me want to be the best possible person I can be. It has grounded me. It has elated me. It has expanded my heart and my mind. I cherish it. Becoming a parent was the best choice I ever made. I wouldn't trade it for anything. Sometimes I wish the days were twice as long, and that I could do this whole last year over again because I have loved it so much and learned so much. I'm not just saying that to make a point, I really do. I kiss my baby hundreds of times each day, and I go to bed each night and reflect on how lucky I am because, even though it's hard work, it's the best investment of my energy, time, and love that I can make.

If you know someone who's expecting, tell them all the wonderful things you can. Offer your love and support to friends with newborns. Help the new mom at the grocery store load up her groceries so she can get her twins out of the rain, even if that means you and your baby get a little wet. Send a care package to a new dad you know. Every one of us is doing a great job, doing their very best. Be supportive, positive, and encouraging.

I am genuinely excited for the people I know who are expecting... especially my sister and Rob. They are in for such an amazing journey full of joy, snuggling, laughter, and fun. They will probably have some sleepless nights, but babies look beautiful in the moonlight.

Here is a little list of my favorite positive family blogs. They really help me, inspire me and encourage me...

James over at Bleubird Vintage shares her adventures in motherhood. She has three beautiful kiddos, Milla, Jullian, and Gemma. On her blog you will find great food ideas for kids, fun little project ideas, and bits + pieces of her life as a stylish mom.
Bleubird Vintage

Naomi's blog, Rockstar Diaries, is the blog I relate with the most. Her amazingly cute daughter, Eleanor, is just a month younger than Gwyneth. It's been so much fun to follow along as she and her husband parent their sweet girl with extreme positivity. They are expecting their second baby this summer.

Rockstar Diaries

Adeline's Daddy is a new blog to me. It's fun and refreshing to read a Dad's take on parenting. He just wrote about what it's like to have a daughter and I loved it!
Adeline's Daddy

Sometimes Sweet is a great blog. Danielle writes (very well) about being a mom to her son Henry, her healthy habits, and her daily life. Her blog has great variety and is very motivational.

Sometimes Sweet

The Littlest is a really sweet blog. Elizabeth shares photos, thoughts, and inspiration. It's always positive and lovely. Her daughter, Elodie, is obviously the apple of her eye.

The Littlest

Katie's blog, Skunkboy Creatures, is fun, stylish, and upbeat. She has two sweet girls, Hope and Poe. Her blog is always a pick-me-up.

Yellow Finch Designs is the blog by busy mom Liz. She has three kiddos and is always positive and proactive.

Gwyneth's First Christmas (and Birthday Party)

We are settled back in at home and it is raining, raining, raining!  I put together this little video from Gwyneth's first Christmas and her first birthday party.  We are having a party on her actual birthday (New Year's Eve) this weekend but we also had one to celebrate with our family up in Seattle.  Thanks so much for the lovely holiday everyone!  Thanks for making Gwyneth's first Christmas and birthday so wonderful!!!

Hope you all had a fabulous Christmas.  I'll be back with some photos from the weekend in Seattle tomorrow or Friday.  I'm taking it easy this week.  Trying to extend the vacation.

Under the Weather

We've been a bit under the weather this week.  Gwyneth has had her first cold.  It set in late last week and she seems to be doing much better today.  I also caught it but have fought it pretty well and we are both feeling immensely better today!  We've spent most of our time over the last few days...

Snuggling...

We had such a fun "sick day" together yesterday.  We just cuddled and played and laughed.  Gwyneth is getting funnier and sillier everyday and she's so active!  Her personality is so apparent and it lights up even a crummy sick day!  I'm so glad we're feeling better today because we have fun plans tonight!  Have a cozy Tuesday everyone.

Style File: Rainy Day Wine Tasting

I don't know about where you live, but here it has jumped straight into winter.  It's about forty degrees every day and it's rainy, cloudy, grey and stormy.  Our snow from Wednesday melted overnight, and with it, all excuses for pajama days.  We needed to get out of the house so we decided to go for a rainy afternoon wine tasting.  We bundled up and headed for the hils.  The drive was nice and queit and we listened to Audrey Hepburn's biography on cd while we drove.  Luckily, it wasn't dumping rain so we snapped a few outfit photos along the Columbia River.  Kyle happened to be looking rather dapper so I made him play along...

Snow Day

It's 1:30 and it's been snowing here since early this morning.  Gwynnie and I are having a pajama day.  I am cleaning up and putting our art back on the walls.  We finally have all of our furniture back in the house and I'm spending the day getting ready for our friends to come over for an early Thanksgiving dinner this weekend.  I'm so excited to put our kitchen to good use with a house ful of people!  Gwyneth took a long morning nap and when she woke up I showed her the snow outside.  She kept saying, "Yeahayayaya!" and holding her arms up to catch it.  She has so many expressions and so much to say.  We have full conversations and we laugh and tell each other silly stories.  There's a lot to talk about.  These days are pretty sweet.  We have a few inches on the ground so we are staying cozy and warm in the house. We are having a perfect day listening to Christmas music and watching the snow fall.

Finally, we headed to the pumpkin patch.  The pumpkin selection was a bit sad since we are on the very late end of the pumpkin pickin' season but it was still really fun to see everything and to walk through the corn maze.

I had such a fun time with my honey and my girls.  According to the weatherman, the cold, rainy weather is heading our way so we are enjoying the last sunny fall days before winter sets in.

Style File: Jeans and Sweaters

Today I've got lots of little things to do... I need to clean the house, run errands, edit photos, prepare some promotional materials for my photo business, backup my computer, go to the bank, answer emails, get organized and hang with Gwyn.  One thing I love about fall is throwing on a pair of jeans and a sweater, putting my hair in an easy ponytail and being cozy and comfortable.  It's not so cold out that you need full on winter-wear yet and I love just having on minimal layers.  I've had these jeans forever... like, for six years.  The zipper isn't a sure thing and they are still a tiny bit snug post pregnancy but thank the Lord they have a lot of stretch to them!  I decided that Gwyneth and I needed a jeans and sweaters day.  Here is what we are wearing...

Grandma's Gown

A few weeks ago, I photographed Gwyneth in my Grandma's little dress, hat and slippers.  My Grandmother, Mary Jo, passed away one year ago and we all miss her so much.  I was pregnant with Gwyneth when my Grandma passed away so getting to take her photos in this little gown was so special.

Coffee and Pastries with Lauren

Lauren is a blogger, food lover, preschool teacher and stylish mama to be.  She lives in Portland and I totally love her blog.  After a few months of following her blog it was obvious that we had way too much in common not to meet up for a little date.  It took a while to coordinate but yesterday we finally made it happen and I'm so glad we did.  Lauren is completely lovely and I highly recommend that you check out her blog The Little Things We Do and her posts over on Babble on her pregnancy experience.  I promise you'll find her charming, warm and super sweet.  We definitely hit it off and I am happy to have her as a new friend.  Here's some photos from our little date (that lasted longer than some celebrity marriages).

Grabbing coffee at Heart.  Amazingly delicious coffee and I loved the style of the coffee house (I snapped the photo below to add to my kitchen inspiration folder)!

I went back on my way to the car and impulse purchased a couple of these mugs to decorate the new kitchen.blogger date

We took our coffee and headed down the block to Alder Pastry.  We both got ham and gruyere croissants and shared an amazing caramel and sea salt pastry... and some macaroons.  We also sampled their gelato.  They have odd but amazing flavors like sesame, muscavado (raw sugar) and cardamon.  Both of these spots were Lauren's recommendation and they were awesome!blogger dateblogger dateblogger date

Making a Tag Blankie

A couple weeks back Poppy and I decided to make Gwyneth some Tag Blankies since her favorite thing about her favorite toys had become the tags on them.  We used my Simple Sewing for Baby book and it couldn't have been any easier!  If you are an avid (or even mediocre) sewer you probably don't even need this book although I totally recommend it!  Also, I'm sure there are easy patterns online.  It was such a great project to do with Poppy and it only took a couple of hours.  The pattern in the book makes one but I made two.  One for the diaper bag and one for home.

We picked out our ribbon and cut it into the right lengths.Tag BlankietTag Blankie

You are really good at fake running.

You finally fit in the sweater I knitted for you when I was pregnant.

You like to use a binki in an interesting way to help you fall asleep on the go.

You are a tummy sleeper.  You like to sleep with your face straight down into the mattress!

You were serenaded by Uncle Rob.

You had your first kiss thanks to Harrison (who loves you).

You said Mama and I got it on video!

You make silly snorty faces...

Cozy Tuesday

I hope you all are having a great start to your week.  There's always so much to do when we return from Seattle and, in this case, even more.  We have to get our whole living room, dining room and kitchen packed up and prepped for full demo this weekend.  We are tearing out the floors and the kitchen and things will remain torn apart for almost a whole month.  I think I'm in denial of how much we have to do. Poppy is spending her last full day here with me before she starts Kindergarten tomorrow!  We are going to cuddle, make cookies, get Kyle's birthday present ready for him and embrace this busy week with positive attitudes, sweatpants and chocolate chips.  Hope you have a cozy day.

Wonderful Weekend: Mom and Mike Visit

This weekend was SO MUCH FUN!  My mom and her boyfriend, Mike, came for a visit.  They've been traveling all summer so it was the first time in a while that we had seen them.  I was sad to see them leave this morning!  Here's a look at our wonderful weekend...

Friday...

Kyle and I started the weekend off with dinner downtown.  It had been such a busy week with the launch of the new site that I had hardly left the house!  It was such a treat to go out and have nice dinner with Kyle and G!

Gazpacho!

Calamari.

Burger and fries.

 Gwyneth and her Riffe Raffe.

Saturday...

We spent Saturday morning reading in bed...

and picking up the house.  I went grocery shopping and drove by this awesome Hispanic wedding!

I got these gorgeous flowers at the farm stand....

...and put together a nice little lunch.

G took a little nap.  I'm not sure why she's sleeping like that!

Mom and Mike arrived midday and we ate a bit before going on a nice, long walk into town.

We got ice cream at Mike's.

Kyle gave our visitors a tour of the brewery.

It was a looong hot walk home.  By the time we sweated our way home we were ready to relax, eat dinner and play Apples to Apples on the patio.

Grilled Tuna Burgers and salad (and grilled peaches in simple syrup for dessert).

Sunday...

We got all prepped for a little hike while Gwyneth took her morning nap.  When she woke up we headed out!

We spent the majority of the day on our little hike.

Gwyneth LOVED being in the backpack!

My view during the hike.

Outdoor baby!

Taking a nap in the pack.

Back at the trailhead.  G has a big red mark on her face from sleeping in the pack.

After our hike we drove a little ways to stop for some fantastic Mexican food.

After our little lunch we came home for a siesta before... yup, heading out to eat again!

After dinner we headed home to bed.

I wish my Mom and Mike could have stayed longer.  It was nice to take a mini-break from working.  Next weekend it's crunch time as we start to prep the house for the kitchen remodel!

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend too!

Impromptu Brother Visit (the sequel)

Yesterday (after I stopped procrastinating) it ended up being a great day.  If I'm being totally honest, I never did stop procrastinating.  I spent the whole, beautiful summer day sitting outside in our backyard working on my creative projects and playing with her...

So much better than studying.  Eventually, I picked Poppy up from school and then we spent even more time playing outside before I actually had to go take my final.  As I was leaving the house my brother called to let me know he and Kaylee were in the area!  It was Kaylee's birthday on Wednesday so we all went out to dinner after I finished my final!  I LOVE when my brother does this!  Our Dad joined us too making it a perfectly lovely evening...

Kaylee love.

Gorgeous view.

A micro micro-brew.

My Daddy.

I love my lil' family.

What a great day!  And that was only Thursday!  Now it's Friday and I can't wait for this wonderful weekend to start... We are planning on laying low, getting house stuff done, planning our summer and relaxing!  Do you all have fun weekend plans?

Wonderful Weekend

This past weekend was absolutely crazy!  We had two birthday parties, a ballet recital and lots of little things in between.  Last week was pretty busy too and by the time Friday rolled around we were ready to get out of the house.

Friday...

Our friends Greg and Sondi called to see if we wanted to join them for Mexican food so...

We put Gwynnie in her best White Trash outfit (Ill fitting bonnet, "I Heart Daddy" onesie, madras skirt and John Deer cowgirl boots) and headed to the Taqueria.  She'll forgive us one day.

Greg, Sondi and Ella.  Ella was enjoying dipping her lime wedge in bean dip.  Mmmmm!

Enjoying the mariachi band.

Danelle joined us too!  Pretty girls!

After dinner we headed over to Greg and Sondi's house to play cards, have Margarita Conjeladas and watch The Food Network feature Fire on the Mountain.

Saturday...

Saturday was absolutely crazy!  I had accidentally passed out with Gwyneth in the bed so her sleep was all off and she woke up pretty early but then was ready for her morning nap around 7am.  We swaddled her up, put her in her room and we all went back to bed.  Kyle and I slept in until 9:30!  Sooo nice.

We knew we were in for a busy day so we gave G a morning bath.  She had so much fun being naked outside!

We went for a walk and then down to the brewery for lunch.

Giving Cluterf#ck a try.  Yup, that's what they're calling their new brew Clusterf#ck.  It's SUPER hoppy!

After lunch we hurried home and I loaded my camera and Gwyneth in the car and headed off to Poppy's ballet recital.  The lighting wasn't great but I got some cute ones of Miss P.

The girls were sooo cute.  They're all getting so big.

Poppy was looking right at me the whole time, waving and giving me thumbs up.  Such a little chumpy!

After the recital Poppy came home with me to have a snack, bath and nap.

We forgot that we told Pops she could take a bath with G.  So Gwyneth got two baths on Saturday which was actually probably great because it was pretty warm this weekend!

After our siesta we loaded up to head to Damon's (a.k.a. Poppy's Dad) Birthday BBQ!

Damon, Amy and Pops.

I think Kyle's a little confused about which bottle is his.

Hula hoops...

corn on the cob...

and watermelon!  It's officially summer around here!

Gwyneth (not sleeping).

Cuties!

Matt and Bear.

Gwyneth (still not sleeping).

Kyle and I headed home around 9 because Gwyneth showed no signs of wanting to sleep and it was WAY past her bedtime!

Sunday...

Phew.  By Sunday we were pretty exhausted.  We went for a little walk 'n' talk in the morning.  I slept/read magazines while Kyle studied.  Then we got ready to go to Ella's 2nd birthday party!

We took shots of milk to get the party started!

The birthday girl!  It seems like such a short time ago that we were at her 1st birthday party!

Greg and Ella June.

Sweet summer sandals.

Outdoor towel time is G's new favorite thing!

It was so nice to enjoy the sun for a bit.

Cake time!

Enjoying her gifts!

All amped up on sugar!

We left Greg and Sondi's around 7 to get Gwynnie in bed at a reasonable time and, as you can see behind Kyle, the muggy day was turning into a stormy night.  We live close to Greg and Sondi's so we walked home quickly.  It was starting to sprinkle just as we got inside.  Kyle zipped up to the store and while he was gone we got hit with the most intense thunder/lightning/rain/wind storm I've ever experienced.  The lighting was so close and loud that I actually screamed (only once) and our outlets popped. The thunder was so intense that I had to cover Gwyneth's ears because it was hurting mine.  Within minutes our street was flooded with water geysering up from the manholes.  I've never seen anything like it!  It was totally strange end to our busy little weekend.

How was your weekend?

Wonderful Weekend: Mom's Birthday Party

This weekend was so much fun!  I spent the long weekend in Seattle with my family celebrating our Mom's birthday!  Poor Kyle had to stay behind to study and work again so it was just me and Gwyneth.

Saturday:

He helped us get on the road Saturday morning.  Bye Honey. We looooove you.

I was sitting in traffic for a long...

long...

long time.

Since I was stopped along I5 (that's "the 5" for you Californians), I took a nice photo of this classic Seattle building for you.  You're welcome.

Finally relaxing at Meghan and Rob's house!

Gwyneth decided this was a fun way to be held by her Aunt Meghan.

We went for a nice long walk, watched a bit of Project Runway, had a yummy dinner at home, gave the babe a sink bath and went to bed!

Sunday:

Gwyn woke up super early on Sunday.

We went to Edmonds to take Danelle (who is also from Seattle and was there this weekend) out for a little coffee, fresh air and snuggle time because we love her!

Then, we went to visit Great Grandpa and had a nice long visit with him talking about our ancestry.  Grandpa is a wealth of knowledge about our families.  I love spending time with him... he always has hot cocoa and cookies.

Meghan and I went to run a couple of errands with Baby G.  I dropped of a bunch of photo prints for my friend at his restaurant (La Isla) and we ran to the store.  As we were heading into the store we suddenly realized that Gwyneth had exceeded the capacity of her diaper.  Luckily, I always have a change of clothes with me!  Meghan (the best Aunt ever) helped me change her in the back of the car.  While we were standing there we got dive bombed by three mallards.  Yes, seriously.  We had to duck!  Get it!

After the diaper and the ducks we needed a lil' drink.  Rob whipped up these yummy grapefruit/vodka cocktails!

Monday:

I rallied the troops first thing on Monday morning to go for a long walk to the Honore Artisan Bakery in Ballard.  Our brother loves it and I've been wanting to go forever.  We walked all the way there and...

They were closed.

I was really, really sad.

Rob was about to give up hope but we started walking in search of better things.  All we found was...

a lawnmower collection...

nobody home at Ryan's house...

and a shaved cat... #$%&!!!!!  We admitted defeat and went home where Rob made us a yummy breakfast.  Then it was time to get ready for Mom's birthday party!!!

Meghan braided my hair like she used to when we were little.  (Yes, I'm wearing Gwyneth's Baby Legs on my arms)

We made two rhubarb, strawberry, apple crisps...

while Gwyneth used Uncle Rob as a teething toy.

Lovely flowers from the garden.

Mom (the birthday girl) arrived early for some extra baby time.

Meghan made Mom a special drink with lime juice and Corona in salted glass that she had loved when she visited Megs in Mexico.

Then the party got started as everyone began to arrive!

Dave, Erika, Mom with G and Mike.

Gwyn with Linda and Ruth.  Everyone couldn't wait to get their hands on our babe!

Everyone enjoyed the sun and the BBQ.

Look how BIG she's getting!

Linda, Dave, Mike and Erika enjoying the party.

Then it was time to torch the cakes light the birthday candles.

Man, that was scary!

Dave, Linda and Dave.  It's a Dave Sandwich.

Ry Guy.

Meghan and Erika dished up the dessert while everyone else began to share stories about Mom.

It was such a nice party.  Happy Birthday Mom!  We love you!

After everyone left, it was just us cuddled up on the couch...

oh yeah, I forgot Rob was there too.

Meghan and Rob sang me a bedtime story and we went to bed.

Tuesday:

We got up this morning and scurried out the door.  We made a quick coffee stop and...

we were ready to hit the road. Gwyneth slept nearly the whole way back and didn't cry at all!  Phew.  The ride up was a bit rough so this was a huge relief.

Happy to be home with Dad!

What To Do When You're Feeling Overwhelmed

As you all know, I was feeling a bit overwhelmed this week.  I had lots of errands to run and things to do.  But instead of doing them we decided to just have a BBQ instead!  I went for a long walk with Gwyneth, filled the house with lilacs, invented a accidental cocktail (I'll have the recipe perfected for you all next week) and invited some friends over to relax and enjoy the gorgeous spring weather.

Tracey holding G and sipping a glass of Little G.  Perfect!

Kyle playing with Ella.

Collin sipping on a margarita.

Kristen and Gwyn.

We finally get to use our deck!

boys + grill / charcoal x meat = happy boys.

Making Grilled Kale Caesar Salad.

Ella, Greg, Kyle, Kristen, Collin, David and Tracey all ready to eat.

It was such a fun, relaxing evening.  After our lovely BBQ (on Wednesday) I was feeling totally reengergized.  I got up on Thursday and ran the rest of my errands and even got the car serviced, I skipped class and sat outside with Kyle and my friend Danelle having a beer.  Now I'm ready for the weekend.  Time for more grilling and relaxing.

Do you all have fun plans for the weekend?

Doing It All and My First Post Pregnancy Sushi!

It's early on a Wednesday morning and I'm trying to psych myself up for a day of running errands.  Some days I seem able to juggle "it" all and other days it all seems pretty overwhelming.  What is "it"?  "It" could be any number of things like: keeping the house picked up, doing the laundry (what is it about having a baby that literally triples your laundry?  I don't get it!), making menus and grocery shopping, remembering to buy dental floss, exercising, auditions, reading up on What the *&^% is My Baby Doing Now and What Should I Do About It?, working, doing homework and cramming for exams, reading back issues of Vanity Fair that I never got to (I'm currently perusing Nov. 2010), squeezing in a shower, prepping dinner, remembering to buy wine (very important), shooting/editing photos (also love this)...  All the while I am also caring for my little one.  Getting her on a schedule, changing her, playing with her, changing her again.  Plus, I have to kiss her at least 100 times each day and that takes time!  I'm trying to keep up with her demand for milk which isn't going very well and I think I may have to add "buy formula" to my list today.  I don't think we will have to give it to her right away but we need to have it on hand.  For about a month now I haven't been making quite enough milk for her so we have been tapping into the supply of milk in the freezer.  Last night, while I had class, we used the last bag of back up milk.  Not a good feeling.  There's some prescription drug I can take to boost my milk supply but I'm not sure if I want to go there.  Phew, that's a lot to be juggling on a Wednesday morning!  Don't get me wrong, I love my role as a working mom/housewife and I get great joy from it but there are days when I wish someone else would come clean the bathrooms and run to the store for me!  Ah, well, it's sunny out and I am going to sit here and sip my tea and pump my milk and then I'm going to head out and try to get it all done.  Working Moms of the world, my hat's off to you.  How do you do it all?

On another note...  last week Kyle and I splurged and joined our friends and their adorable daughter for a sushi dinner.  It was totally out of our budget but I begged Kyle to take me and played the "I haven't had sushi for a year!" card.  Here's a few photos from our fun double triple date.

Greg, Sondi and Ella.

Sondi and the kiddies.  Although G appears to be super bald she actually is growing quite a bit of fuzz and has a lil' tuft of hair too (or a hair curtain as Poppy calls it).  It's just under Sondi's hand so you can't see it.

Yum!

Gwyn lounging with Greg while I use both hands to stuff my face with sushi.

Raw fish and saki induced smiles.

Ella knows where it's at!

It's been a while since I've done a what I wore add on, mostly because my clothes don't fit but I managed to pull it together a bit for our date night! (Note to self: this camera angle makes you look like you have a pea head.  Next time have Kyle stand above you.)

Vest: LA Made

Jeans: Gap boyfriend jeans

Shoes: Frye Ava Pumps

As Gwyneth approaches the four and a half month mark, Kyle and I have had a chance to look back and think about the items that have helped us the most.   With so much "baby stuff" out there it's hard to see clearly what's what.  I have been a nanny for ten years now and was lucky enough to have that experience that helped us get prepared.  We made our list we registered, and now we've put these items through the ringer for the past four months.  Many friends and family members are expecting babies and have asked us about thing that we've used and loved.  So, here's our list of the things that have worked for us...

BED TIME

Aden + Anais Swaddles and The SwaddleKeeper

Gwynnie all cozied up in her swaddle and the SwaddleKeeper!

We absolutely love our Aden + Anais swaddles.  They work wonderfully and are beautiful. They are big and gauzy so they wrap well and stay put.  I honestly beleive that swaddling Gwyneth is a huge contributing factor in her being a good sleeper.  When she does manage to get out of the swaddle, she becomes agitated and will stay awake playing or fussing and get overtired.  If she's in there snug she is happy and goes to sleep easily.  A key component to the swaddle-action success is the SwaddleKeeper.  It was invented by our friend Kim.  Kim is a labor and delivery nurse, a doula and she actually delivered Gwyneth!  The SwaddleKeeper does exactly what it's name indicates, it keeps the swaddle on!  We've used it from day one and we don't go anywhere without it.

Kim holding Gwyneth.

Kim has very generously agreed to do a SwaddleKeeper Giveaway!  I know so many of you are expecting or have newborns at home and I can't stress enough how great this product is!  It would also make a great shower gift!  With the SwaddleKeeper you also get a DVD and instructional tips and advice for swaddling/sleeping success.  This product has been called "Sleep in a Box".  Who doesn't want that?!

To enter the giveaway, visit Kim's website (http://www.swaddlekeeper.com/) and then come back here and leave a comment letting me know something you found interesting there, which color you'd choose and your email address!  You can even leave a note as an anonymous person just make sure to include your contact info in the comment!  That's it.  Just post your comment at the end of this post!  I'll choose a winner using a random online selector next Friday!  We love our SwaddleKeeper so I'm really excited for this giveaway!

The Sleep Sheep

When we first started out we were very anti-soothing "stuff".  We didn't really want a sound machine, a swing, pacifiers, a vibrating chair.  We love to travel and we felt that having Gwyneth hooked on these soothing methods would be a short term solution that would be a big problem in the end.  I still believe that to be true in the case of the swing or the vibrating chair but a couple weeks in, we felt that we needed a method of soothing her that was transportable, consistent and that didn't involve us actively doing something to calm her.  I'd heard great things about The Sleep Sheep so we decided to order one and give it a try.  The Sleep Sheep has a sound machine in it that plays four different sounds: heartbeat, rain, ocean and whales.  We usually stick with the rain and ocean.  The heartbeat sound isn't for us and the whale sound reminds me too much of this:

Anyway... we love The Sleep Sheep and have incorporated it into Gwyn's sleep routine.  It has two different time settings 23 minutes and 45 minutes.  I recently discovered two things: 1) It takes a baby 20 minutes to become truly asleep so now we use the 23 minute setting when she's first going down for a nap or bedtime and 2) Babies sleep in 45 minute sleep cycles.  Now we use the 45 minute setting when she wakes up at 5:30 in the morning.  Usually this buys us another 45 minutes of sleep!  We had just been using the 45 minute setting all the time but discovered it disrupted her nap when it went off in sync with the end of a sleep cycle.  Make sense?  p.s. There's also a travel size!

ON THE GO

Emergency Baby Kit

We keep an "emergency kit" with us in the car at all times with a spare blanket, changing mat, wipes and current-size disposable diapers, a pacifier (even though G doesn't really like them), a full change of clothes including a hat and socks and a change of pajamas.  This just-in-case kit has come in handy several times.  Once she starts eating solids we'll add in a jar or two of baby food and when teething really gets going we'll probably toss in a thermometer and some infant Tylenol too!

Bugaboo Frog Stroller

I love our Bugaboo Frog stroller.  We use it all the time.  It's lightweight, fun and easy to use.  It's everything I hoped it would be.  Buying it used in good condition is the way to go!

Bundle Me

Poppy's Mom insisted we needed to have this cozy car seat snuggly thing.  I thought, nah, we'll just use a blanket.  But Poppy's Grandmother got one for us and I'm soooo glad she did.  It zips up around the bottom, it's cozy and warm.  It helps her fit snuggly in the car seat.  Plus the top zips off for when it's too hot out or opens when they get to long for it and make a great impromptu play mat:

BATH TIME

Tummy Tub

As you can see Gwynnie loves her Tummy Tub.  This has made bathtime such a joy!  It's definitely easier to do with two people/four hands but I've managed it on my own a couple of times and as she gets more steady it will be a breeze.  It's small so she feels safe and the water stays warm.  It took us a while to figure out the right temp for her and that (because she's so tiny and didn't displace enough agua) we needed to fill the water a bit higher than the fill line.  I highly recommend this!

DIAPERING

BumGenius 4.0 Diapers

After trying a few different kinds of diapers, including FuzziBunz and Rumparooz, we found that the BumGenius 4.0 Pocket Diapers with Snap Closure worked the best for our little string bean.  They are slightly less bulky than the others and they come in such fun colors!  We did a great 30 Day Test Drive via Diaper Junction and were able to return the FuzziBunz, Rumparooz and the BumGenius with Velcro Closure and order the rest of our supply.  I loved going through Diaper Junction.  They have great customer service and spent a long time on the phone with me answering my questions.  They are clearly passionate about getting the babies of the world in cloth diapers!  We now have 20 cloth diapers total and we are so excited to stop buying disposables which cost about $.25 each!  Not to mention it's better for the environment.  You can get gift certificates through DiaperJunction too which is great.  Our whole diaper set up cost about $400 but we had $300 in gift certificates!  We've already spent about that much on disposables in just four months so it's a very worthwhile investment.  They are easy to use and wash.  Go cloth!

NURSING AND EATING

Born Free Glass Bottles

We just started using these and we love them.  They are vented so the nipple doesn't collapse and they seem to flow really well.  They have them in BPA Free plastic but we wanted to go with the glass ones.  They are pricy but will last forever because they're glass (unless Gwyneth's Godmother drops one of them which is highly likely).

Boppy (Breastfeeding Pillow)

I love using this breastfeeding pillow.  I made mine using the book called Simple Sewing for Baby but you can buy them lots of places.

The Hooter Hider

Like the Boppy, I don't know what I would have done without this.  It's convenient and easy to use.  I highly recommend getting one.  The one pictured (the one I have) is an organic cotton on made by Baby au Lait.

Nursing Bras

As you all know, I had a horrible time trying to find a nursing bra.  I finally found and ordered this Soft Cup Nursing Bra from Gap Body both in black and nude (they're on sale now for $20... I think they might be discontinuing them) and the Madela sleep bra (also ordered from the Gap).  I couldn't be happier with them.  It made such a difference to have a comfortable nursing bras.  Also the Lansinoh Breast Pads (below) are fantastic.  Like every mom told me, they are the only ones worth buying.  Forget trying the others, these are the best.

Books:

Okay, these are the only two books we read, but I think they were the right match for the style of parenting we were aiming for.

The Healthy Sleep Habits book provides lots of info on what constitutes a good sleep pattern, what time for what age is appropriate for naps and some methods for teaching your babe to self-soothe.  His method consists of putting your baby to sleep at the first signs of drowsiness.  This took a while to get the hang of because the line from drowsy baby to overtired baby is very small and hard to detect but now that we've learned Gwyneth's signs of drowsiness (which change constantly) we are usually able to put her to sleep without much fussing.  He says, "perfect timing produces no crying".  Where his book lacks is that he continually tells you to soothe your baby but he doesn't tell you how!  For that we have found that the methods shown in The Happiest Baby on the Block DVD (you can rent it from Netflix) worked well for us:

The Happiest Baby on the Block (we took the shortcut and watched the DVD instead of reading the book).  We found these soothing methods to be really effective and pretty easy to master.  The things that worked best for us in the beginning were swaddling, swinging (by hand, not in a swing), side-lying and shushing.

Secrets of the Baby Whisperer is a wonderful book.  It's easy and entertaining to read and has a lot of logical approaches to parenting, soothing and "what to do when" info.  I love that Tracy really respects babies.  So much of parenting is intuitive but sometimes a lot of it seems counter-intuitive.  We really wanted to let our baby learn to self soothe and be content and calm.  We found Tracy's simple methods of S.L.O.W. and E.A.S.Y. to be great matches for what we wanted and helped us to figure out what Gwyneth needed.  I highly recommend this book.  Gwyneth's changing quite a bit and things have gotten a bit trickier so we just ordered The Baby Whisperer Solves All Your Problems and started reading it.  It's worth ordering them together because this one takes her original method to the next level and is full of TONS of great info and addresses all the variables!

So there you have it!  I sincerely hope that this list of items and info is helpful to some of you.  Don't forget to enter the giveaway!

Wonderful Weekend: Mother's Day

We had such a fun weekend in Seattle.  It was busy and went by really quickly!  Gwyneth got to visit lots of family and friends and we had a great Mother's Day brunch before heading home.  Hope you all had a lovely weekend.  Here's a few photos from the weekend.

Saturday:  We spent the day on Saturday visiting with our families.  Gwynnie got some quality time in with the great grandparents!  She's one lucky baby.

Happy Mother's Day!

Exactly one year ago, I found out I was pregnant.  I was only a couple weeks into the journey when Mother's Day came around.  Becoming a mother has been the best adventure of my life so far.  I am reveling it, loving it and cherishing every aspect of it.  When I wake up (very early) each morning and look at the squaking, smiling little creature next to me, I feel completely happy.  I can't wait to watch her grow up into the girl, young lady, and woman that she will become.  Motherhood has been more wonderful than I could have imagined it would be.  I'm completely over the moon for this little girl.  As my Grandma would have said, she's the bees knees.

There is so much energy, intensity, joy and excitement surrounding pregnancy and babies!  It's such a unique experience to be on the journey to becoming a mother.  I asked those of you who had a baby or have been expecting this year what you loved most about the motherhood experience.  Here's what you had to say...

Anfisa with her two daughters, Oliva (2.5yrs) and Kayla (4mos).

The best thing about being a mom is seeing my children learn and grow.

Megan with her duaghter, Lucia Denise (10mos).

What I love most about being a mom is loving Luci!

Traci with her two daughters, Ottilie (5yrs) and Opal (6mos).

What I love about being a mom is hearing my girls laugh and knowing that they are happy.

Marion and her duaghter, Nina (3.5yrs) and a baby due next September.

The thing I love most about being a mom is finding out that I am capable of such unconditional, (and often irrational), love for another human being.

Brittany with her daughter Beyonca (3mos) and Beyonca's Godmother, Kari.

Brittany: When I peek into her room at 5 am and she just catches a glimpse of me... that big smile, that's my girl, she's my world.

Kari: Becoming a Godmother this year gave me a front row seat to the magical progression that is motherhood, watching Brittany evolve into the beautiful mother that she is has been an extraordinary learning experience for me.

Becca with her daughter, Kesha Lee (8mos).

Being a mom is indescribable. To create a life, watch them grow, help them develop and become a person of their own... It is the one, true unconditional love in life.

Kate and her son, Waylon (2wks).

I love the fact that I love someone so deeply I get excited about his poop. Also, now I really have a new love and understanding for my own mother; I understand what those dopey looks she gives me are all about.

Maria and her daughter, Evelia (11mos).

There's nothing like seeing the excitement and joy in my baby's face and body when she sees her mama. That smile makes the tiredness and stresses of life go away. I am so blessed to be a mama. It makes me feel complete.

Jessica and her daughter, Claire (8mos).

I love that when I tell Claire to wiggle, she does.  I love that with every day that passes she looks more like me.  I love learning all the selfless lessons that you have no choice but to learn.

Ellen with her three kids, Joe (5yrs), Kate (2.5yrs) and Baby K (3mos).

I love best the moments when they make me truly laugh and, since I don't live with my sister anymore, finally having someone to share potty humor with. I also love the power- the power to create wonderful memories that will shape their future selves, the power to ask of them that which they are capable and see them change and grow.

Stephanie with her son, Harrison (1.5yrs) and a baby girl due in August.

What I love most about being a mom is the quintessential lesson our little ones teach us about truly being in the moment.  I love re-experiencing the world through the curious eyes of a toddler.

Kelsey and her son Kameron (1yr).

The best part about being a mom - is that I learned what love truly is. I know it's cliche and all but I see a different outlook on life and feel like I am not living for myself anymore, I am living and doing everything for my family. Having my son has inspired me to be a better person and to raise a wonderful and happy baby regardless what life tosses me!

Nicole and her daughter, Madison (2wks).

My favorite thing about being a Mom is how complete my family is now, I love watching my husband relishing his new role as a Dad, it makes me so happy. Madison's numerous facial expressions as she sleeps amazes me, I am in awe of how beautiful she is.

Jessica, expecting in May.

I'm so looking forward to meeting this tiny person that has been growing inside of me for 36 weeks, sharing he or she with my husband and learning who they are and will be.

Me and Gwyneth (4mos).

The thing I love most about being Gwyneth's mama is knowing that I get to be a part of the life she will create for herself and I get to encourage, support and love her every day.

Thank you all so much for sharing your photographs and thoughts.  I wish you all a truly wonderful Mother's Day.

Love,

Kacie and Baby G too!

Impromptu Brother Visit!

I was really pleased and surprised when, on Monday night, my brother Ryan called and asked if he could come for a visit!  He and his lovely ladybird Kaylee arrived yesterday afternoon and stayed through last night and this morning!  It was so nice to have them here for a short stay.  We had my Lemony Roasted Chicken and Potatoes for dinner, my favorite Lemon Pound Cake (Test Kitchen) for dessert and Hot Toddy's for fun.  It was such a fun, relaxing visit.

G loves Uncle Ryan.

¡Viva México!

After a long, cold winter we were so in need of a vacation.  Lucky for us, Kyle's parents had bought us tickets to go to Cabo, Mexico for Christmas!  It was our first time ever taking a vacation where all you do is sit on the beach!  It was WONDERFUL!  There's nothing like getting up in the morning and putting on your swimsuit at 8:30.  I took a lot of pictures... just apparently not many without the baby in them.  It would appear that she never got set down during the whole vacation.  She's gonna need attention detox this week.  Here's a few pics from our trip.

Brunch at the restaurant.

Siesta by the pool.

Life was pretty chill in Cabo.

Siesta on the beach.

This was pretty much how we spent 8 hours a day.  Not too shabby.

Seriously... we never put her down.

Enjoying cervezas in downtown Cabo.

Gorgeous sunset.

Having coffee on the deck of the condo.

First swimsuit from Aunt Meghan.

Life was rough in Mexico.

Up early to watch the sunrise.

Thanks Dave and Erika for a wonderful vacation!

A few things that happened this month:

You really started to smile!  You crack yourself up.

You learned how to self soothe.  We just swaddle you up and pop you in bed and within five minutes you are sleeping!  You also started sleeping through the night!

Calypso is starting to, kind of, like you... she's still a little jealous.

You watched your first Oscar ceremony.

You rocked my 1980's leisure suit.

                     You.                                                Me.

You officially charmed us.  We'll do anything you want us to do.

And, with that, I am going to take a week off for a bit of R&R with the fam.  See you all next week.

Me and G Do PDX.

Whew!  Yesterday was cah-ray-zay!  I had my first post-pregnancy audition so it was me and the babe on the town in Portland (locals refer to it as PDX) all day.  It was a little hectic getting everything ready and together for our big day but somehow I managed and we had a fantastically busy day being girls on the town.  I took pictures every hour throughout the day...

9am

A little embarrassing but this is what I looked like after attempting to put in curlers while breastfeeding.

10am

Drivin'.

11am

Eryn (casting director) holding G after my audition.  Maybe this will help me get jobs? ;-)

12pm

Next up was a trip to REI where I considered getting this very responsible rain jacket that was on clearance.  But... then I figured, I've made it 28 years in the Pacific NW without a rain jacket and I'd rather buy something less logical... like shoes!

1pm

Hee hee! Someone had these in the window of their office.  Awesome!

2pm

Time for lunch at the Daily Cafe.  I got this delicious salad which was very healthy and satisfying.  However, the girl next to me got a big plate of fries and a cappuccino...  I was jealous that I didn't think of it first.

3pm

A quick trip to Trader Joe's and a stop in to pick up my shoes from the repair shop!

4pm

Back at the casting office for a callback!  Gwyn needed a quick change of clothes after she peed all over the first set!  Thank goodness I came prepared!

5pm

Back in the car after the callback ready to head home!  We spent a bit of time sitting at stop lights.  I knew I was going to be an hour late for class because the audition time went over.  I was feeling a little stressed until I got a call that class was canceled!  Woohoo!

6pm

Since I didn't have class and since the day had been so long, we decided to grab beer and burgers for dinner!  I got the incredible XXX burger which has pickles and peanut butter on it with sweet potato fries.  I know it sounds gross, but trust me, it's sooooooooo good.  It's the only thing that keeps me from being a vegetarian.

7pm

Finally home.

8pm

End of the night feeding then we all went to bed!

Nana Visit and Oscar Party!

This weekend was WONDERFUL!  Just what we needed after last week.  My Mom arrived on Friday night, we had yummy Barley Lentil Soup for dinner with garlic bread before we all retired to bed early.

My favorite thing about the weekends is getting to wake up and snuggle with Gwynnie and Kyle.  Most mornings he's up and studying while G and I sleep in and cuddle.  She is such a happy baby in the morning and it was so fun to get to share her giggles with my Mom.

While G took her morning nap, Mom did my Tracy Anderson workout with me and then we bundled up the babe and went out to lunch at the bakery.  After lunch, we visited with friends and had a really lovely day.  We made a simple dinner and had a quiet evening.

Sunday morning came too soon and it was already time for Nana to head home.  She got some good bb cuddle time in while Kyle started making French Baguettes and I whipped up some crêpes stuffed with lemon ricotta and topped with banana and blueberry sauce!

After breakfast, Nana had some play time with Gwyneth before she had to head for home.

Gwyn LOVES her Nana!

Once my Mom headed out, I started getting ready for our Oscar Party!  I freakin' love cozying up on the couch and watching the Academy Awards.  I sarted making this fantastic vegetarian chili that I make every year (if you make it do not add more than the recommended amount of chilis!  It's super spicy just the way it is!  Serve it with sour cream, sharp cheddar cheese and cilantro to cool it down) and...

...normally, I would make these yummy cornbread muffins.

But this year Kyle wanted to make baguettes!  They turned out so good!

I got out the Oscar books...

...printed up the ballots for voting...

...got out the tiny oscar...

...and started admiring the red carpet fashion!

When my Dad and Stepmom arrived they got right down to business picking their winners.

I made Gwynnie this silly onsie.  (Yes, I know I'm a HUGE dork.)

"Dude, Mom, you are soooo weird.  Plus, it's not fair to take advantage of my reflexes by making me hold this thing!"

We had such a nice evening watching the show, eating chili and fresh baked bread, cuddling with the babe and sipping wine.  I hope you all had a lovely little weekend too!

So tiny!

Week 2...

Amazing rainbow... I didn't do anything to this photo in Photoshop!

Week 3...

I love her perfect little hands...

...and her wrinkly skin!

Daddy time.

Long baby.

Week 4...

Snuggle time with Danelle.

Too small for the swing.

Tired baby and tired Mama.

Movie night with Pops and Nonna!

Fat neck!

A few things that happened this month...

You have become much more alert and track things with your eyes.

You love to look at windows.

You smile when you are awake and alert, when you are dreaming, when you are waking up and falling asleep and when you hear your Dad’s voice, you even smile while you're eating (which often results in spilt milk)... you are a very smiley babe!

You love to hang out in your Moby and fall alseep there and you love to snuggle.

You can lift your head up on your own and hold it for about ten seconds.

You sleep with your arms and hands in funny positions which makes us giggle.

My favorite thing that you do is, when you just finish yawning you make a very loud ducky sound so, I’ve started calling you Ducky.

You fight going to sleep a couple times a day and amazing stare endurance.  You can keep your eyes open even when you are so tired!

You (mostly) love having bath time.  You become very quite and kick around a lot.

You had your first slow dance with your Daddy.

You have started doing tummy time which you seem to enjoy for about five minutes.

You've started making new sounds, chirping, squeaking, sighing and grunting.  It's so cute!

#'s:

12 diapers a day.

3 changes of clothes.

2 1/2 hours of soothing time each day.

No less than 60 kisses per day (much more if Poppy is over)!

At least 5 hours of cuddle time.

About 6 hours of breastfeeding.

8.4 pounds..not sure how accurate our scale is... this seems crazy to me!

21 inches

Busy Week

The past two weeks have been so full of joy. Here's a peak at what was happening around our house.

Amazing rainbow through our front window.

Calypso's starting to accept that Gwyneth is here to stay.

Hee hee.

Working on her pout.

We took Baby G up to Seattle for a long weekend to meet the members of her family who hadn't/weren't able to make it down to visit us.  We headed up on Thursday afternoon and Gwyneth did great on the four hour drive!  We spent Thursday night having dinner with Kyle's parents and Nana (Great Nana to our little bird).  In the last three weeks Nana has welcomed three great grandchildren!

On Friday morning we took Gwyneth to meet our friend Leah who's a midwife in Seattle and has been a huge source of advice and support for us over the past 10 months.  After coffee with Leah, Kyle stayed home with the babe while Erika took me to the mall in search of nursing bras.  Um... where the hell are you supposed to buy nursing bras?!?!  We went to Nordstroms (they had three choices "in the back"), we went to Macys, Sears and Victorias Secret who didn't have any, we went to Motherhood Maternity who didn't have my size (is a DD that strange?), and I've already been to Target and couldn't find any!  Ugh!  If you have any suggestions I'd be happy to hear them.  In the evening we headed over to my Grandpa's house so that he could meet his first great grandchild.  He was clearly smitten and amazed by her!  He held her for a long time and referred to her as "amazing" and "a viking princess" several times.  My Great Aunt Helen was there too.  She was so happy to meet her great great grandniece.  It was so wonderful to see four generations together.

We were pretty exhausted from such a busy day.  We stayed the night with Meghan and Rob and they had picked up Thai food take out for us for dinner.  Perfect!

Saturday was a big day.  We had a make up baby shower for Gwyn at my sister's house since we'd had to cancel the last one due to the preterm labor scare.  It turned into more of a "meet the baby shower" so we had lots of family and friends there.  Gwyn slept through the whole thing!

Linda, Mom, Dave and Rob enjoying the baby.

Jody and Michelle.

Kyle chatting with his Nana and "Nan" (Gwyn's honorary Grandma... what a lucky girl to have four Grandma's!)

Hanging with Uncle Ryan.

Yummy Macaroons from a local bakery.

We got some really lovely and thoughful gifts for her from everyone.  After the shower, Kyle and I left the babe with Meghan and Rob so we could zip down the street for lunch at our friend's Puerto Rican restaurant, La Isla.  Then, in the evening we joined our friends Jeremy and Tara for a yummy dinner of enchiladas at their place in Fremont.

We spent Sunday morning wathcing the Seahawks game lose at my Mom's house with her boyfriend, Mike and Meghan and Rob.  We headed home around 1:00.  Gwyneth slept the whole way home (other than the half hour we spent feeding her at a rest stop)... I even managed to sleep for an hour which is amazing for me!  I am doing my best to become a napper!  We got home just in time to watch the Golden Globes in our pj's.  All in all it was a busy but wonderful weekend.

Today is the first day the baby and I are home on our own because Kyle had to go back to work... although he did come home long enough to take her to her two week appointment.  She had to get a heel poke and a Hep B vaccination.  I've been there when other kids that I've nannied for have gotten shots but it was soooo much harder to watch her get one.  I cried.  The doc says she's growing great (she gained half a pound, grew 3/4 of an inch and her head is 3/4 of an inch bigger).  She's in the 80th percentile for height and the 15th for weight.  Now we're back home and she's asleep on the couch and I'm going to attempt my first Post-Pregnancy mat workout before it's time to feed her again!

A BIG Blog About A Tiny Baby

This week had flown by!  We are enjoying/loving/feeding/kissing/holding/staring at Gwyneth constantly which makes it a little hard to blog.  It's all accumulated over this week so here is a big post all about her...

A few things about you:

You were born at 1:37 a.m. on December 31st, 2010

You weighed 6 lbs 11 oz

You were 20.5 in tall

You have light brown hair and steel blue eyes.

Your name is Gwyneth Rosemary Bennet Larsen

Gwyneth

(Celtic/Welsh: white, fair, blessed, happiness)

We chose this name for you because we just loved it.  It is old fashioned and feminine and delicate and unique.  It just felt like the perfect name for you.  I also was reminded of my favorite book when I was younger called Gwinna by Barbara Helen Berger which is the story of a powerful young girl taking flight (literally) and finding her strength and power.

Rosemary

(Latin: dew of the sea)

We chose this middle name for you because of your two maternal Great Grandmothers, Rosellen and MaryJo, who meant the world to me.

Bennet

 (Latin: blessed)

We chose this second middle name for you because Pride and Prejudice is my favorite book and, although it’s a romance, it’s really a story about a family full of intelligent, complex and unique women.  I was introduced to it by my Aunt Sue who is an intelligent, complex and unique woman herself.

Gwyneth's Birth Story:

On Wednesday morning I started having contractions that were 10 minutes apart.  They went on all day on Wednesday and all through the night and I didn’t sleep very well.  We headed to the doctor on Thursday morning and Michele, the midwife, checked me and monitored us and determined that things were slowly changing.  When I got home around 11 a.m. the contractions had started back up.  We were so used to the contractions by this point that Kyle went to work and I got busy making butternut squash ravioli and watching movies.

The contractions continued to go all day about 10 minutes apart, and it wasn’t until about 4:00 p.m. that I called Kyle and asked him to come home because I was beginning to need some support getting through them.  My sister called to let me know she had changed her flight to arrive in Portland and was headed to the airport in San Francisco so that she could be here to support us.  At this point, I still didn’t really believe or comprehend that I was in labor.  Kyle and I cozied up on the couch to watch a couple episodes of Mad Men.  I don't really remember the second episode.  Meghan arrived and rubbed my back through the contractions, held my hand and talked to me about her Christmas.  She sat with me while I ate chicken noodle soup and she and Kyle ate the ravioli I had made earlier in the day.

I took a shower, washed my hair and got all ready for bed.  We thought it would be a good idea to try and get a bit of rest.  We all went to bed around 10:00 p.m. and it was only a few minutes later that my contractions went from bearable and 10 minutes apart to unbearable and 2-3 minutes apart.  At 11:00 I began feeling really sick to my stomach and I threw up a few times and was shaking really badly.  Kyle was worried so he called Michele and Margo (our doula) and also called my mom and told her she needed to get on the road!  By the time Margo arrived around 11:30 p.m. I was ready to go to the hospital.  I was really panicking and in very intense pain.  I was afraid that if we didn’t go now, I wouldn’t be able to go at all.  Margo’s presence really calmed me down.  She coached me to not fight the contractions, to just accept them and to keep my body relaxed and the contractions slowed down again and spaced out.  At this point I was ready for drugs!  I truly didn’t feel like I could do it anymore.  I was sooo tired, homesick and scared.  I kept saying, “I don’t like this” and “I want to go home”. Kyle kept telling me that I could do it, that I was strong and that he loved me.

At 1:00 a.m. Margo encouraged me to get up and walk up and down the hall a few times.  I was standing in the hallway with Kyle's arms around me when my water broke at 1:05 a.m.  I went to the bathroom to change my clothes.  I was really hitting a wall at this point and I knew I couldn't do it anymore.  I didn’t want to feel another contraction.  I wanted an epidural.  I kept thinking and saying, “I need help”.  At about 1:15 a.m. I somehow made the decision to take a hot shower and I told myself that, if the shower didn’t help ease the pain a little bit, I was going to go to the hospital and getting an epidural.

I climbed into the shower and knelt down.  Kyle put a towel around my shoulders to keep me warm and let the hot water run on my back.  Suddenly, I had a really strong contraction and felt something change.  My body began to push and I was sure that I was going to have the baby there in our bathtub.  Margo directed me to get out of the bath and Meghan and Kyle helped to dress me.  Meghan wrapped a big fleece blanket around my shoulders from the dryer to keep me warm.  We flew out the door and I was standing on our front steps when my water really broke and gushed all over the pavement and froze there because it was 20 degrees out!  Within seconds we were in the car, it was 1:28 a.m. with Kyle driving and Meghan in the back seat.  I kept feeling the intense urge to push.  I was trying to fight it but my body was working on it’s own.  I was literally holding the baby in and I was yelling, “I’m having her in the car!” and Meghan kept saying, “You are not having her in the car!”.

We sped the mile to the hospital and pulled up to the emergency entrance.  Kyle ran and grabbed and ER nurse who appeared with a wheelchair.  We got to the elevator which seemed to take a hundred years to come.  The entire time I could feel her coming out.  We entered the birthing center and saw our friend Kim (who is a doula and labor and delivery nurse) standing by the door to room 237.  Kim quickly assessed what was happening and she said, “Okay, she’s crowning.  Get in the bed now.”  I got into the bed and I felt down and felt the top of her head.  Kim instructed me to push.  I grabbed Kyle’s hand with mine and pushed once and her head was out.  I felt it with my hand and it was so tiny and strange!  I pushed once more and she was out!  Gwyneth Rosemary Bennet Larsen was born at 1:37 a.m., only nine minutes after we left the house!  Kim held her up said, “Here’s your baby.”  They handed her to me and I had her on my body. It didn't feel real at all.

Natural childbirth was the hardest thing I’ve ever done and the most intense experience I’ve ever had but, also, the most wonderful thing that I’ve ever done.  I had said that I didn't want IV's, didn't want to be monitored and checked constantly, that I wanted to have as close to a home birth experience as possible and that I wanted to stay home as long as possible.  I think that we succeeded in all of that!  I didn’t think I could love Kyle anymore than I already did, but having gone through this intense experience with him, I love him even more.  All I remember is seeing his face close up to mine, seeing his eyes through a curtain of my hair and feeling his hands comforting me.  His love for me in those moments of pain and his unyielding confidence in me that I could do bring our baby into the world naturally has intensified the strong bond we already had.  The love I feel for him and for our tiny baby is immeasurable and impossible to put into words.  I feel like the luckiest woman in the world.
