little things

"I'm a Big Sister!"

Gigi is totally ready to be a big sister. We got her this wonderful book called, I'm a Big Sister (there's a version for big brothers too) and G has been reading it to her baby doll a lot. It was actually surprisingly hard to find a completely thoughtful, positive book about becoming a big sister. A lot of them portrayted the big sibling as getting spoiled and bribed, and frankly, being awfully bratty! So, if you're looking for a sweet one, this is it. It mentions ways she can be helpful, what she can do, and points out how very special she is.

big sister

The other day she asked to get in the baby's crib with her doll, tucked her in and proceeded to read the book to her. It was heart-melting. My favorite is when she reads, "Look at me! I'm your big sister!" She's going to be such an amazing sis. We also have a few little presents tucked away for her from her baby sister. One thing she can use to "play" with her sis (an old school Fisher-Price doctor kit), and something just for her (a Melissa & Doug sticker book), and something silly (a bright purple calculator since she loves "doing calculations with my Dad")!

big sistermidwife

She's been cuddling my belly, and is more and more interested in feeling the baby move. And at our doctor appointment this morning they let her find the heartbeat all on her own, her eyes lit up and she was so excited and said, "That's a silly baby!" She plays "midwife" all the time at home. Using a measuring tape to measure my belly, listening, and she even gets a little towel wipe the imaginary gel off my tummy... and today she put on her (imaginary) gloves and said, "Okay, Mama, I need to check your 'gina!" Maybe she's come with me to one too many appointments...

As ready as we are to welcome this little one, I'm also enjoying all of these moments.

Spring Baby Shower // Guest Post for coco+kelley

Good morning everyone! I'm so thrilled to be guest posting for my sweet friend, Cassandra, over at her blog coco+kelley! We actually grew up together, attended the same high school, and have reconnected through this fantastic blogging community of ours. I'm over at her blog today sharing my simple ideas for a spring baby shower...

This + That

fruit popsicle

Here's a few things I've been entertaining myself with lately...

My friend Anna just opened a popsicle stand at our farmers' market (see the photo above) and now I'm planning to order this book!

This movie about Coco Chanel called Once Upon a Time, by Karl Lagerfeld was lovely.

I love my friend Lauren's baby name posts. We already have baby girl's name (mostly) decided on but I can't help myself from browsing through them. My favorites were her Last Names As First Names and Old Lady Names! Another great baby name source I discovered is Nameberry - really unique names, categorized in really unique ways.

I've been watching every single episode of Gilmore Girls. (which leads me to my favorite current adivce: Don't judge your pregnant friends.)

My lovely friend, James, made ketchup and I can't wait to try making it myself. We've made lots of barbeque sauce around here, but never ketchup!

I got this Snuza baby monitor after reading this article about it by Danielle... I'm already feeling more relaxed!

Erika featured me on her blog, Rouge+Whimsy. She shared our cooking video and recipe for Oatmeal Raisin Cookies.

Finally, here's a little video that proves that Gigi is, without a doubt, a brewer's daughter...

These past weeks have been filled with a lot of sunshine and a lot of sweetness. Everything feels calm, and productive, and still... I know that's all about to change with the arrival of this baby so I'm soaking it up. Kyle's parents arrived late last night and are staying through the weekend. We'll be working in the backyard planting, trenching and putting in irrigation, and leveling an area for a patio... when I say "we" I mean they. This morning Kyle is off to work early to brew a special beer for the baby, he made one (called Little G) when Gigi was born too!

Lots and lots and lots of Daddy cuddles.

A Little Update

maternity photo

-I wanted to say THANK YOU for all your sweet comments, love and support regarding our little hospital visit last weekend. I'm feeling better and better each day. We had a very reassuring doctor appointment yesterday and our OB/midwives seem confident that we can get to at least 35 weeks (I'm 32 now). Gigi was born at 39 after I had preterm issues with her, so that's a good sign. I received a series of steroid injections to boost baby girl's lung and intestinal functions, so that makes me feel a little less worried. The whole experience is definitely unnerving and scary but we are doing great thanks to the support of family and friends. I'm doing my best to take it easy, sewing, reading, catching up on computer work, and watching movies. G has been an absolute doll this week... she's taking good care of me.

-My sweet friend, Kyla Roma, shared our cooking video on her blog yesterday... in case you missed it you can watch it here!

-The Q&A on French Kids Eat Everything is coming soon! I got a bit delayed with the hospital visit but I've emailed all your questions off to Karen and will post them as soon as I get her responses. We will also be giving away a copy of French Kids Eat Everything to a reader, so stay tuned.

-You also have until next Tuesday to enter the giveaway from Miss Darling Clemetine!

Have a wonderful weekend!

From the looks of these photos it would appear that all we've been doing is cooking and hanging out in our pajamas for the past month! That's not entirely accurate. But being pregnant and sick, and having a very sick toddler did require a lot of pajama time... and come to think of it, I have been doing a lot of cooking lately. Beyond that we've been so busy with visits and events. I have to admit, I'm pretty glad that the first half of March is behind us. I was beginning to feel completely depleted and close to tears. In fact, I may have cried the other night in the middle of preparing dinner. But now that we have quiet days on the horizon and I'm finally feeling better, things are starting to look up. I'm trying to do my best these days balancing getting work done and being the best mom I can be. Some days feel easier than others in that sense and I'm starting to doubt whether "balance" is just code for "what element am I going to compromise today"? I'm okay with compromise, or I'm learning to be anyway. When I was pregnant with G I focused all my energy on cooking and preparing and planning for her arrival. This time I feel like all my energy is going into work... I'm thinking I may turn my computer off as soon as I hit publish on this post and spend the day with no screen time. I think a little sewing might be just the thing to do on this rainy day.

The photos...
Sick pajama cuddles with my girl. I think these may be two fo my favorite photos of all time.
Gigi and I made a little french toast breakfast in bed for Kyle... then of course G wanted to join him. It was pretty sweet.
I cannot get enough fruit these days. Especially of the citrus variety.

I made a ton of Whitney's Peanut Butter and Honey Granola.

A Long Weekend and Maternity Series // Week 27

pregnancy photography

This is how I spent the majority of my weekend. Kyle headed out of town for a long weekend with his Dad and Uncle in California, and my sis and nephew came down to visit. By late on the first day it was clear that both kiddos were teething and/or coming down with something. Somehow we made it through long three long nights with two very sick babies... just barely. As rough as it was at times, I still managed to have a wonderful time with my sister who is my very best friend. I drank a few too many half decaf lattes and probably didn't eat enough.

Gigi is still really sick this morning so we're heading to the doctor in an hour and we are planning in staying in our sweatpants/foot pajamas all day long eating popsicles and watching Peter Pan for the 1,000th time this week. I may even buy a box or two of Annie's Mac and Cheese for dinner tonight. Even with sick kid, a husband out of town, no sleep, and a growing belly... I don't really feel like complaining. I feel so fortunate, even on the hard days.

It's beautiful out today and it seems like we might be turning the corner into spring! Last night when I was making dinner the sun was starting to set and the warmth from the sun was coming through the window in the kitchen and I could feel it on my back. It felt so, so good. By the time we shake this cold and these molars come through the daffodils will be starting to bloom!

Finally, I'm adding my Maternity Series letter in with this blog post today...

I Love You Sister!

baby kick

Last night as we were getting Gigi ready for bed, the baby started kicking and squiming so I pulled G over to me and had her put her hands on my belly. She hasn't shown much interest in feeling the baby move but this time she waited for a moment with both hands on my tummy, staring intently at my belly button and was rewarded with a few big strong kicks right on her palms! Her eyes got really wide and she looked up at me and started laughing. Then she gave my belly a little kiss and said, "I love you Sister!" and my heart completely melted. It was the best moment. Gigi flipped onto her back and put her hands on her own tummy and sucked it in and out, making it move like mine had been. Then, just like that, the moment was over but it's something I'll remember forever. These precious toddler moments seem to come and go so quickly. I feel like, more than ever, I have to be present with her as often as possible or I'll miss them. We are about to head out for my 26 week appointment and she'll get to hear her little sis's heartbeat which she loves. When I ask her what a baby says, she replies, "shhh shhh shhh shhh", making the swishing sound of a heartbeat. These wonderful moments make the fact that it's getting hard to put my shoes on, let alone hers, worth it!

30.

birthday

Today is my 30th birthday! (Don't you love my dress in the above photo?) I'm pretty lucky to get to share my birthday with the best brother ever. He's been abroad for almost a year and I've miss him like crazy. Today also happens to be the 3rd "birthday" of this little blog. Thanks so much for sticking around and visintg, commenting, participating... it means so much to me.

I haven't had much time to think about turning 30 but I did sit down yesterday and journal a litle bit. I find that lately whenever I reflect or make goals, it's all about simplifying, organizing and finding ways to stay more in the moment with my family by removing unnecessary distractions. I am really looking forward to spending the year with my growing family, making our backyard (which is a bit of a disaster) into a wonderful garden and space to spend time with friends, hopefully traveling a little bit, reading lots of books, cooking and eating wonderful food, hugging my babies as much as possible... it's all about the little things for me this year.

I'm pretty excited to get to spend the weekend with my family and friends in Seattle. Kyle took a few extra days off of work so we'll have a lot of time to relax and play. So, with that, I'm off for the weekend. Hope you have a great one.

BabyLegs Love

I LOVE Babylegs. Gigi has somewhere around 20 pairs! They're just so dang cute and functional. She is so tall that they really help keep her cozy when her pants aren't quite long enough, when she's rocking the onesie look, or wearing a cute dress. I really adore these sweet leggings. The available styles are constantly changing so I can always find new ones that she "needs".

I find that when we travel I pack a ton of BabyLegs and little dresses and onesies. They hardly take up any room and are so easy to wash and dry. When we went to Europe for three weeks that's all I packed! I only brought two pair of pants which made it possible for me and Gigi to share a suitcase.

We have ALL of the Babylegs below (and a few more)...

babylegs girls stripes caterpillar pink lemonade pink dot sweetheart girls best friend

babylegs boys argyle stripes wildlife jolly roger touchdown

babylegs girls this is love oohlala taffy skeeball

Anyway, I just adore Babylegs and wanted to share my obsession with you. The styles and patterns change seasonally but they often have great deals on their website!

The weather here has been cold and grey and I'm craving some sunshine... the idea of a few rays of warm sun, a sandy beach and fresh fruit is starting to make me crazy! Last night at 10pm I almost made Kyle go to the store to get me a ripe cantaloupe. Doesn't that sound amazing (or is it the pregnancy talking)? Come to think of it I also made him grill eggplant outside the other night and it was like, 27 degrees out so maybe it's the pregnancy. Either way a little sunshine is needed around here. Yesterday it peeked through the clouds just long enough for me to shoot some food for a magazine spread before it ducked back into the grey rain clouds. All we've been doing lately is cooking, snuggling, eating, watching movies, and playing board games. We are addicted to Carcassone. It's incredibly nerdy but really entertaining. Oh, and we watched Hitchcock (didn't love it but it was interesting), The Impossible (incredibly stressful but so well done and well acted), The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (sweet and a little inspiring) and Beasts of the Southern Wild (really fascinating and intriguing). Tonight we'll flip a coin between building fortresses (Carcassone) or watching Lincoln and folding tons of laundry.

The photos...
Simmering beans for chili.
Coloring all day, every day.
Making cookies to cheer up grey afternoons.
Morning cuddles with Daddy.
Rain rain rain.
An escape to the park.

Slow roasting tomatoes.
A teething toddler.

On My Mind 1.21

baby belly
This moment was so sweet. Gigi sat patiently with me for a few minutes waiting for the baby to kick. She was not rewarded for her patience but I soaked up every second of her warm little hand on my belly.

daddy and gwyneth
G is such a Daddy's girl! She loves helping him with anything and everything. The other day we were driving in the car and she said, "I wuv Daddy!" Me too kid.

kitty paws
I'm trying not to get bored and stir crazy... it's hitting that time of year where I need a little sunshine. We get really banked in by fog. Someone send Vitamin D.

kid laptop
Gigi got this fantastic chalkboard laptop from Tara and Jeremy for her 2nd birthday. She loves it and plays with it a lot. "Mama. I makin' a list! I workin' too... on my 'puter!"

bunk sandwiches
G and I had a little Portland date. Kyle had to head to Seattle for beer event so we dropped him in Portland and made a day of it. We met up with Chelsey and Rauri, bought a book on being a big sister, and had lunch at Bunk Sandwiches.

nana visit
Nana came to visit and she and Gigi had a wonderful time. It was a nice, quiet weekend, we need more Nana visits.

spinach ravioli
This was an easy dinner of fresh-made ravioli stuffed with a mixture of ricotta, sautéed spinach, one egg, salt and pepper. Topped with a simple pesto recipe I found in Super Natural Every Day (made from cilantro and toasted pumpkin seeds)!

silly girl
This kid has been getting into some tight spots lately. We were sitting in the other room and heard her little voice say, "Mama... Dada... I okay... ... I neeeeeeed help?!"

cooking
We've been cooking up a storm together! We made a delicious ratatouille together.

sag awards
Finally, we've been watching a lot of great movies lately. I get some free screeners in the mail every year and free downloads so I can vote for the SAG Awards... a total perk of being a sometimes actress. My favorites so far have been Argo, which was so insanely intense I think it gave me a stress ulcer... Les Misérables, which I thought was absolutely spectacular. We still have a whole stack of movies to go, and thank goodness because with weather like this and an empty bank account there's not much else to do!

Monday Morning

This morning I woke up full of energy... maybe it has something to do with the fact that I spent the majority of the day out of the house yesterday. I had a little photo session in the morning, then I met up with my wonderful friend for breakfast and a day of watching movies, sewing and crafting, and I didn't come home until 8:30. I think it was the first real time I've spent out of the house in months! I grabbed my camera this morning and snapped some photos of our first hour, from 7am-8am...

breakfast
This girl wakes up hungry! She generally has two eggs scrambled with cottage cheese and a whole wheat waffle or toast.

blankies
While Gigi eats breakfast, I start some laundry. I try to do one load a day and it's helpful for me to split our laundry up. Today was a G laundry day which consists of washing all of her blankies. These little security blankets are like her binki. She has two at a time and sucks on them all night which means they need constant washing. I bought her four new ones for a stocking stuffer.

pajamas
I'm also washing these 3T size pajamas for her since she's moment away from outgrowing her 2T size. She is one tall little girl!

baby bump
My bedhead and baby bump! It's really starting to show which I love. As weird as pregnancy can be I'm finding myself really enjoying it this time around. Maybe part of that is really understanding what the end result is... I'm so excited to have another!

christmas
We got our Christmas tree this weekend and have one little gift under it.

storm clouds
Grey morning clouds over the mountain. We don't get to see the mountain often in the winter but it sure is beautiful when we do.

sewing
Yesterday I sewed this little ornament for Gigi. She was frustrated with her lack of participation in the tree so now she has her own little ornament to hang and play with whenever she feels like it!

books
I'm currently reading Les Misérables and Parenting with Love and Logic. I have had Les Misérables on my shelf for a few years and have been waiting and waiting for the perfect window to read it. I finally started it and then learned about the film coming out. I want to finish it before the release but I highly doubt that's going to happen. As for Parenting... we are heading full-tilt into the twos and we are both wanting to approach these important years ahead with thoughtfulness and patience. This weekend was not an easy one and it's clear that Gigi is beginning to really need our guidance and consistency in a new way.

bath
Morning bath. Why not?

I hope your week is off to a good start!

On My Mind 11.16

bagel and cream cheese

I'm trying to get back into work mode. I've got a lot of catching up to do. I still haven't shaken this cough but am feeling better during the day. Lots of tea and lots of work are in my future this next week or so. To be completely honest, I am actually looking forward to doing it. I'm pretty lucky to love my jobs as much as I do. I've been trying to balance my time better and not work too much but that's resulted in not working enough!

cozy
Instead of working, I've been spending more time on the couch with this little gal. The fact that we've both been pretty sick all fall has made it a little too easy to ignore the lists and the laundry and grab a good book. Gigi is currently reading Madeline over and over and over again. I just finished reading Bringing Up Bébé and I'm a few chapters into Les Misérables. For those who've asked I have lots of thoughts on French Kids Eat Everything to share with you really soon! I wanted to really give the methods a few months in our own home before I shared my opinion with you. Oh also, I've been asked a couple of times about what we figured out with G's sleeping habits. She did drop the morning nap. It took a few weeks but now, after our trip to Seattle, is finally taking 2-2 1/2 hour afternoon naps. I put her down after lunch and she wakes between 2 and 3. This also helps us to follow the French Kids Eat Everything schedule. She's also sleeping longer at night. From 7pm-7am for the first time ever. She used to be a much earlier riser. Also, it's probably important to note that we made her big kid bed back into a crib. We were reluctant to do this at first but we thought it best, at least until her new sleep schedule was well established.

cupcakes
These are the cupcakes I made for our friends who came over on election night. I won't get into my political opinion here but they were definitely celebratory.

gwyneth
Gigi is such a joyful little toddler. She's feisty and energetic and talkative and outgoing. She makes me laugh constantly. Yesterday we heard a rooster crow so I told her it was saying "cockadoodledoo!" Then we got in the car and the whole way home she kept saying "chicken cock- chicken cock-". I eventually corrected her. Now she adds the essential -adoodledoo! to the end of her rooster imitation.

kitty
Now that the weather has shifted quickly towards winter, (I swear it went from 50 to 30 overnight!) this cat has been doing this all the time. Right now she sitting on my arms while I'm typing.

vogue
I found G on my bed yesterday serious faced, fully absorbed in my Vogue magazine. I had to try so hard not to laugh. Like mother, like daughter.

pancakes
We've been having pancakes here a lot lately. I'll share our recipe with you soon! Yesterday morning it was just me and G but I made them anyway and we had a date in our pajamas with pancakes and syrup. *Note: Don't leave the syrup unattended. Kyle did this and turned around to see Gigi drinking it.

big girl
I cannot believe this girl is going to be two years old in less a month and half! Time to start planning a little celebration. Look how tiny she was at three days old! Her taste in footwear hasn't changed.

Finally I leave you with my new favorite video of G. These kind of shenanigans and constant around here...

I hope you have a fabulous weekend!

Sick Again.

sick day

Gigi and I spent the last half of the week and the weekend in Seattle. We went up full of intentions to call on our family and friends but, after arriving on Thursday we both came down with a bad cold. First Gigi and then me. Sore throats and coughs. We spent the majority of the weekend holed up at my mom's house eating soup and saltines. We drove back home yesterday afternoon. It rained the whole way. After a good night's sleep (Gigi slept from 7pm-7am!) we woke up not feeling much better. So, it's a sick day around here. It feels like the two of us have been sick all fall. First with a tummy bug, then a cold and now this. As much as I hate feeling under the weather, I'm doing my best to enjoy these cozy days with my little sweetie. On top of being sick it's freezing out and raining and grey. The perfect combination of excuses to enjoy our first Mother-Daughter Masterpiece Theatre Pride and Prejudice Marathon. G will probably spend the day cuddling with me and looking at the new books her Nana bought her this weekend. We'll do some unpacking and laundry too... I love doing laundry this time of year and watching the steam and heat from the dryer billow out into the cold air. I remember running around outside as a child, seeing and smelling the steam coming from the side of the house. It always tinted the chilly air with the slight smell of dryer sheets. I won't be venturing outside today but I'll watch the steam from our kitchen window while I wash the dishes. So there you have it. That's what our day will look like... domestic chores, cuddling, movie watching.

Hullabalu

hallabalu toyshallabalu toys

Hullabalu is a line of cute and funny stuffed animals. They recently sent Gigi this charming fox whose named Nigel Noblecam. She adores Nigel, he even came to Europe with us. Gigi calls him "Fock...s". It's very cute. The site for ordering the toys works like a rewards system. As you refer people to it you get rewards like discounts and free shipping. My favorite thing about thier toys are the quirky and silly descriptions of the animals. For example, Nigel "plays cricket but doesn't know the rules, likes talking to foxy ladies, dislikes singing 99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall..." Adorable. Nigel is no longer available but they have a whole line of new fun animals to choose from! You can check out there site here.

We leave tomorrow for Sweden and Scotland! Everything is packed up, we are spending the day tying up loose ends and getting the house and kitty organized for our friends and family who will be staying here to take care of things. It's still kind of surreal that this trip is finally upon us. I can't wait to give my brother a big hug and settle into the Swedish countryside for a week. Then, we'll be in Scotland during the Fringe Festival and there will be lots to see and do with Gigi. That lucky girl will have many stamps in her passport before she turns two. I didn't get my first passport stamp until I was 18. I'll keep the blog updated during our trip!

On My Mind 8.3

I can't believe we leave for Europe in one week! I've packed nothing. Prepared little. But I don't care! In the past when I've traveled I've made big lists, checked things off, added things, stressed about things. This time around I would have expected to be an super planner since it's our first international trip with a baby but... instead I'm just feeling really mellow. I normally stress about the flight since I have major anxiety about flying, but this time I'm just choosing not to! I want this trip to feel like a walk in the park. We have our passports, the important things are booked. I'll pack some clothes and I'll probably forget a few things, I always do... but we'll figure it all out. I guess part of me feels like there is little I can control traveling with a tot so why bother trying to make it perfect and control it? I'm just planning to stay in the moment, go with the flow, and have the time of our lives. How lucky are we to get to take this trip?

beach baby
This week I took Gigi to the swimming pool. She's getting so big but the minute we get in the water she holds on tight, asks for help, and is a little timid. It reminds me how tiny she still is and, although I want her to be independent and brave, it makes me feel good knowing she trusts me so much and depends on me...
me and gwyn
...there are times lately when I just stare at her and will myself to take every inch of her in. When she's sound asleep in her bed and I check on her. I put my face right next to hers and smell her sweet baby breath, rest my cheek against hers and try to memorize the way she is. With every inch she grown my heart bursts with joy. I can hardly put into words how much I love this little kiddo.
sunset

cooking video
This last weekend I shot my next cooking video! This one was easier because it's a one dish meal. Last time I did a main course and a side! I had so much fun shooting it and I can't wait to share it with you!

pixie cut
I am so in love with my haircut! I had been thinking about starting to grow it out, but now that I've cut it super short I may keep it this way for awhile. It feels so great and I am happy to be getting back to my natural color. Dying it was fun but I'm definitely a blonde.

poppy gwyneth
We've been getting some Poppy time over the past couple of weeks and I LOVE it! Since Pops started school we missed her so much. You should see the way Gigi lights up when she is around. She squeels and yells, "PAH-PA!!!" She adores her and Poppy is so wonderful with her. Gigi is one lucky girl to have such an adoring "big sister".

I am happy.

June Care Package

bread cheese meatprociutto

Last month I decided that Kyle needed a care package. He had surgery on his shoulder, had some stress at work, was working hard at home... the man deserved a little special something. Kyle loves few things more than good meat, delicious cheese, and fresh baked bread. Before his surgery Kyle was baking bread every weekend, and he is planning to sell all of his home-brewing equiptment and buy all the things necessary to do his own charcuterie. Since you can't knead bread with a bum shoulder, I went to our fabulous local bakery and picked up a baguette, and to our local farm stand and got some prociutto, and two kinds of cheese. I chose Miramont Brie, and Telaggio D.O.P. Perolari. We buy the Telaggio cheese all the time, it's salty and flavorful but not too overpowering. It goes really well with procuitto.

Sending a care package, or putting something simple together for a friend or loved one, or a stranger for that matter, is one of my favorite things to do. If you decide to make one, please tell me about it!

The Sweetest (Lip-Dub) Proposal Ever

My friend shared a link to this on Facebook and (although I'm supposed to be studying right now) I just had to share it with you. A Portland actor, named Isaac, proposed to his girlfriend in the most amazing way. It's so clever and sweet...

...okay, now I'm really going to study. Hope you are having a great start to your weekend.

On My Mind

Kacie Cooking
I've been cooking up a lot of food... and I'm working on my first cooking video to go along with my first published recipe! Stay tuned!

books and baby
Gigi has been full of cuddles lately. She loves her books and can't get enough of them. I found her in the armchair like this the other day! She climbed up with her blankie and as many books as she could gather. What a sweetie!

Dad and baby
Kyle had shoulder surgery last Thursday so we've been laying low around here. He's actually been helping me a ton. He's been helping me get Gorge in the Gorge all ready for the busy summer season. He's pretty uncomfortable but he's on the mend! Note the matching expressions... they always do this! Two peas these two.

ikea colored cups
G loves her little IKEA cups and has been playing with them constantly... stacking and unstacking them. Plus, LOOK at how her hair is growing/glowing! It's almost time for hair clips. I'm in love with these ones and can't wait to order some for her.

I'm having a terribly hard time focusing on my schoolwork. I completely underestimated how hard it would be to just DO it. My presence around here might be a little sporadic until I get my two 10 page research papers done...

I'm so excited to become an Aunt in just a short time... I'm thinking I better get my bag packed and my camera ready for my trip to Seattle since the call could come any time now! How wonderful is that!

I'm working on a great series of posts about traveling to Paris. I get asked every year about my favorite things in Paris so I decided to put together a whole series and I'm loving it!

We need to buy our tickets to Sweden for this summer! I'm so excited about traveling. We are working on a couple of things with Gigi (like ditching the crib and the highchair) in preparation for traveling... I'm nervous about these transitions, but maybe it will be easier than I think!

The light in the evenings lately has been so gorgeous. Every evening around 5:30, I just want to grab my camera and dash out the door.

I know I'm a little late to the party, but we are obsessed with Downton Abbey. We just watched the Season 2 finale and now I don't know what we're going to do! I love it... watch it now if you haven't!

Finally, here's a video of our very silly girl, who keeps us in fits of giggles from morning to night...

That's all for now... hope you have a great start to your week.

Bath Time

At the end of the day, even on the harder days, I love giving Gigi her bath. In fact, I look forward to it all day long. When she climbs into that warm water she becomes the silliest baby, bursting with giggles. It's a time for me to really be in the moment. I try to take it all in... the way her hair looks, the smell of the baby soap, how tiny her little shoulder blades are... For some reason, during bath time, I'm always so aware that another day is done and it's going by way too quickly.

Boy, do I love her to pieces.

Also, I'm pretty sure the majority of her hydration for the day comes from drinking bathwater. C'est la vie.

I hope you all have a great weekend... Kyle had shoulder surgery yesterday so we're going our best around here to keep everyone comfortable, rested, fed, and happy. Looks like it might be a queit weekend for us.

A Day Off

chai 10 speed coffee hood riverGywneth Hug

This morning I woke up full of plans to get everything done. I made the decision to go to school full-time this quarter so I can wrap up that chapter of my life. I feel a little crazy over here at times. I love this blog and my foodie website and I'm so thrilled about all the great oppurunities their bringing into my life. I'm staying busy with my photography business, and I've started working with Double Mountain (where Kyle is a brewer) doing some social media work.

With all of that great work, and school full time, I just sometimes feel like I'm not being the best mom. There's been not enough book reading, and park visiting... and way too much Winnie the Pooh (which she now asks for: "wiinneee-a-poooooh?") and way too much "Hold on one second, honey". Next week is midterms and I then I'm halfway there! Only 6 more weeks of school, then I can focus on all the projects that are near and dear to me (including being a more attentive mama).

Anyway... like I was saying, today I woke up with a big list. But we were all cuddling in bed and Gigi took Kyle's hand, and mine and said, "GO?" while nodding vigorously. So... we went. We walked to the coffee shop, got lattes and amazing Strawberry Rhubarb Scones. Then I walked home and took an hour to work out, which I haven't done in a while (more on this later). Then I took a shower with Gigi, where we sang silly songs and stayed in for way too long. Then we got ready for the day, made lunch, and before I knew it... I had decided to take the whole day off!!!

No work for me today. I'm doing laundry and picking up, hanging out with Gigi, cuddling lots, I finished a good book, and will maybe start another. It's raining and I'm just enjoying not forcing myself to power through homework. It will mean an extra crazy day for me tomorrow to wrap up the week, but I needed a break! What do you do to decompress (I could use the suggestions)?

March Care Package

With the trip to LA I'm a little behind on some posts. I thought I'd get caught up and ahead on my trip... boy, was I delusional with my expectations. This was a little care package I sent to my sister just before we left for our trip. She's expecting a baby boy in June! I can't wait to be an Aunt. I already love this little boy so much...
Care Package Baby Boy Gift Ideas

In Baby H's care package... a nice card, Gossie (one of our favorite kids' books), Carter tie onesie and jeans, and two pairs of BabyLegs. The Argyle BabyLegs are one of my favorites but I also fell in love with the monster ones! How perfect for a boy?

Take a few minutes to send a little care package to a friend this month. It's my new favorite hobby. If you do send one, please come back and tell me about it!

Snow, Taxes, Laundry, and All About Eve

I'm spending the day today doing my 2011 taxes, which I have to get done before me and Gigi leave for LA. I'm watching All About Eve (on of my very favorite movies) while I'm sorting recipets, etc. Wathcing a classic movie makes even tasks like folding moutnains of laundry and doing taxes better. Plus, it's snowing outside so it feels kind of cozy. As much as I detest these kinds of chores it will be so nice to have them done. All About Eve and Taxes

...and G is finding ways to keep herself entertained while I work...

Hope you are all enjoying a nice little Wednesday.

February Care Package

I am a few days late on posting this care package because I, well, i was a few days late in sending it! A couple weeks ago my wonderful friend and mentor, Deborah, broke her leg in three places. She had surgery last Monday and is on the mend, but the recovery process is going to take a while. Gigi and I are heading to LA in a couple of weeks and can give her a big hugs when we get there but, until then, this care package will help to cheer her up.

February Care PackageA beautiful card I've been saving for years, waiting for someone who really needed glamorous girls in glitter adorned swimsuits. Burt's Bees Pomegranate Lip Balm. Coffee beans from our local roaster. Two dark chocolate bars. A copy of my favorite book,  A Prayer for Owen Meany.

In case you missed the last couple of Care Package posts, I'll be sending a care package every month this year. It just takes a little thought, a few bucks, and a few minutes and it can really help brighten someones day. If you want to join in, please do.

Music Lyrics as Art: Money Can't Buy Me Love

This has been a no-money-in-the-bank kind of year. It was our first year of being really, really, really broke. It is stressful but also full of little lessons. Kyle and I work great together in challenging times... it's one of the things I love most about our relationship. I decided to make Kyle something special for Christmas that would remind us that, even though we don't have money, we are beyond fortunate. With Valentine's Day just around the corner, this would be a great, inexpensive gift. The whole thing cost $30.

Money Can't Buy Me Love Art
Supplies:
frame (I bought this 16x20 Ribba frame with matte from Ikea for $20)
posterboard (30 cents each)
1 tube Acrylic paint ($7)
felt pen
wet wipes or a damp paper towel

Directions:

Step 1: Lay your posterboard over the frame. Use your pencil to mark where the edge of the painting will be (where it goes under the matte) to make sure it your painting fits within the frame. Trim the excess with scissors if needed.
Money Can't Buy Me Love Art
Step 2: Use the felt tip pen to write your words onto the plastic wrap that covers your frame. Use wet wipes to erase it until you get the spacing and style the way you want it.
Money Can't Buy Me Love Art
Step 3: Copy the words/spacing onto the posterboard gently with the pencil. Put a bit of paint into a jar or on a small plate. Using the paintbrush practice a few times on a spare peice of paper or posterboard. When you are confident, paint over the pencil writing on the posterboard. Allow to dry completely before carefully erasing any visible pencil marks.
Money Can't Buy Me Love Art

Step 4: Wipe the pen from the frame wrap, then remove the wrapping and discard it. Frame your words. Wrap in gift wrap and write a lovely note.

That's it! It's really easy and budget friendly.

For this project, I was inspired by this DIY from A Beautiful Mess, this one from Oh Happy Day, and this room decor from Amanda Johnson.

January Care Package

This month I sent a little care package to a sweet friend who was having a bit of a hard time along with the prescription for baths, Sex and the City (all six seasons) and lots of hot baths. This care package was sent with lots and lots of love.

It contained my favorite Tension Tamer tea, some DVD's, a couple of dark chocolate bars, a tiny bit of lavender oil, and a letter.

It's so easy to spend a little time putting together something like this and it feels wonderful to send a little love in the mail. I'm going to send one each month this year. Join in if you want!

Lunches with Daddy

Gigi and I love nothing more than slipping out of the house in the middle of the day to meet Kyle for lunch. We do it just about every week. Usually we just meet him at the brewery to grab a pint and a pizza. It's so fun for Gigi to get a chance to see her "da da da DAAAAA" in the middle of his busy day. Lunches with Daddy are one of our favorite things.

Choosing Positivity in Parenting

Cozy Girls Style File
There has been a blog post being passed around the Internet talking about motherhood. I'm not going to even link to this article because, frankly, I found it to be cynical, sarcastic, and negative.  While I understand the need to vent, I am fed up with the negative. The negativity began when we first shared with people that we were expecting...

"Enjoy these last months of sleep."
"Breastfeeding is soooo hard."
"You two are going to bicker all the time. Babies bring out the worst in your marriage."
"Say goodbye to your sex life."
"I didn't shower for like, four months after our baby was born."

Everyone warned us that doomsday was quickly approaching. All Kyle and I wanted was for one person with young kids, just one, to say to us, "Parenting is so fun! It's amazing. It's the best choice we ever made!”, without prefacing it by telling us how hard it was and how much this or that sucks. But, it was all doom and gloom and poopy diapers on the horizon, apparently.

We made a choice to ignore every negative statement that came our way, or to turn it into something positive. If people told us we were going to bicker all the time, then we devised a plan on how not to do that. If people said we would no longer have sex, then we decided we would schedule it if we had to.

The negativity continued after Gigi was born...
"Oh wow, she slept through the night? That won't last." ...and when it did... "You're second baby won't be like that!" Really?!

In the past year have we slept less? Are my boobs “never going to be the same"? Has our household hygiene been less stellar? Did we bicker sometimes? Have we eaten dinners of cold pasta while balancing a crying baby? Do some days just plain suck? Has it been stressful, challenging, exhausting? Of course! Everyone who decides to become a parent already knows that it will have it's challenges. Why not, for a change, share with those around you who are expecting or who are new parents how wonderful it is! Tell them about how parenting is fun, funny, amazing, perfect, magical, ridiculous, life changing, the best! Because it is.

I often feel that people discount my "Pollyanna" outlook on motherhood because I'm "not cynical yet" and I have an “easy” baby. This is always said with smile that says, "come back and talk to us when you are as bitter about motherhood as we are." I am very grateful for my life, my husband, and my baby. Sure, I’ll admit that Gigi is the perfect baby for us. But that doesn’t mean she doesn’t whine, cry, wake up in the middle of the night, bite, pinch, or do any of the things that every other baby does. There's a lot of work that goes on behind closed doors and it's frustrating to have that work written off as luck. Perfection is in the eye of the beholder.

Everyone assumes that because I am so happy to be a mom, rarely complain, find joy in the little things, and find humor in the hard stuff, that I have had a really easy baby and an easy transition into motherhood.  But it wasn't that easy. After Gigi was born, I plummeted into a state of extreme anxiety. I felt extremely nervous and unbelievably angry. I was hit with intense panic attacks, I heard voices in my head that were threatening and terrifying, I was afraid of myself, fearful of everything, I cried a lot, and my body tense with anger. After a few weeks I finally managed to say to Kyle, "I think I'm going crazy. I think I need help." Asking for help was incredibly hard. As a mother, I didn't want to need help. Luckily, I had worked with an amazing counselor in my late teens, and was able to call her for the help and support I desperately needed. I worked with her a few times a week over the phone for my first two months as a new mom. Just talking helped. Exercise helped. Fairly quickly I was able to regain my footing, and proceed with joy and intention into my role as a Gigi's Mom.

About a month ago I was watching an old interview with Brooke Shields on Oprah (because that's how cool I am), and she was talking in-depth about her experience with postpartum depression. As I watched, something clicked. I completely connected with some of the things she was saying. Not all of it, but a lot of it. The bizarre thing was that, I had read this when I was going through my own experience with postpartum anxiety, or depression, or whatever you want to call it. At the time, I read it and thought, how terrible... it would really suck to feel like that. It wasn't until just a month ago that I recognized myself in it. I thought that having postpartum depression meant that you didn't care for your baby, didn't feel love for them, and weren't ever happy. I was happy a lot of the time, euphoric even. I loved Gigi beyond anything I ever imagined, so I didn't recognize what I was experiencing. I'm so glad that there's help when you need it in the form of wonderful lactation consultants, other parents, husbands, sisters, your own parents, friends, and counselors.

The point is, it hasn't been all easy, or perfect for me. I choose to be appreciative, positive, to seize the day, and to live in the moment as much as I can. I love being reminded by sweet older ladies to enjoy it because, "It goes by so quickly". It reminds me to live each day with gratitude, even the hard ones. I love being a parent. I love having someone who needs me and relies on me. I have never had the desire to work so hard for anything in my life. Having a child has made me want to be the best possible person I can be. It has grounded me. It has elated me. It has expanded my heart and my mind. I cherish it. Becoming a parent was the best choice I ever made. I wouldn't trade it for anything. Sometimes I wish the days were twice as long, and that I could do this whole last year over again because I have loved it so much and learned so much. I'm not just saying that to make a point, I really do. I kiss my baby hundreds of times each day, and I go to bed each night and reflect on how lucky I am because, even though it's hard work, it's the best investment of my energy, time, and love that I can make.

If you know someone who's expecting, tell them all the wonderful things you can. Offer your love and support to friends with newborns. Help the new mom at the grocery store load up her groceries so she can get her twins out of the rain, even if that means you and your baby get a little wet. Send a care package to a new dad you know. Every one of us is doing a great job, doing their very best. Be supportive, positive, and encouraging.

I am genuinely excited for the people I know who are expecting... especially my sister and Rob. They are in for such an amazing journey full of joy, snuggling, laughter, and fun. They will probably have some sleepless nights, but babies look beautiful in the moonlight.

A Cozy Little Monday

We had a quiet weekend.  It's nice and snowy here.  It was perfect for hot cocoa, palmiers, and walks in the snow.  I spent most of the weekend working and cooking.  Last night we watched the Golden Globes with our friends and went to bed early.  Now, it's nearly time for Gigi's morning nap which means tea for me, school work, and photo editing.  Hope you all have a wonderful Monday.

Sunday Stroll

I spent all weekend working.  I'm spending all day, everyday on the computer finishing up work for a new website (which I can't wait to share with you).  Yesterday, the clouds cleared and the sun broke through.  It was too beautiful out not to go for a family walk.  We decided to head up to our favorite little coffee shop, take in the fresh air, and relax for a bit.

Not a cloud in the sky!  Today has been a little crazy.  School started again and I made myself register.  I'm this close to finishing my degree.  Since my classes are all online that means I'll be spending even more time on the computer than I already do.  Between the blog, my photography, my new website, and school, that's a lot of computer hours.  I know how important it's going to be to take advantage of the sun-breaks.  Hope you all are having a great start to your week!

December Care Package

Back in August I told you about my love for sending care packages.  I am a believer in the idea that, a small act of kindness, goes a long way.  My favorite way to spread kindness is through a thoughtful care package.  It's all the better if you don't say anything and just pop it in the mail.  Then someone you love gets home from work to find a few little treats.  I am going to do a little care package every month this year!  I'd love if you'd join me.  It really takes only a few minutes and it feels great!  If you decide to join in and send one too let me know.

We don't have much money right now but I'm getting creative!  Here's a little low-budget care package I sent to my mom...

Care PackageCare Package
A small container of Dr. Bronner's lavender soap for cozying up cold evenings, and some herbs de provence because my Mom loves to make yummy soups all winter long.  I bought the herbs in the bulk section and put them in a jar I already had.

I also sent her a borrowed copy of The Help.  Even though she has to give it back (to Kyle's Mom) after she finishes it, she still gets to enjoy it, and a Theo Hazelnut Crunch chocolate bar.

And, of course, a nice letter.

G and I are in Seattle now, spending the weekend with Kyle's parents.  We are missing Daddy a lot but I have to admit it is really nice not to be home.  Things at the house have been pretty stressful lately.  There's always so much to be done and I can't ever seem to do it all.  I've been suddenly feeling really, really burnt out.  This weekend up here will be a nice time to reboot, take a walk around Greenlake, catch up on all my photo editing, sit outside, sip red wine, watch Funny Face and put some thought into how I can slow things down a bit.  Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

The Anatomy of a Care Package

I love sending a simple care package.  It really takes very little time and money, just a little thought and a lot of love.  I guess my love for care packages comes from when I would spend a week away at summer camp.  The mail would come and everyone would get excited when the mail truck came.  Not every year, but some years, a package would arrive from my Dad and Nance.  In it would be a funny card and some little treats.  Over the years I have enjoyed sending care packages for numerous reasons (when someone isn't feeling well, when someone I loved was abroad and was craving peanut butter, when someone was struggling) and I've also sent quite a few for no reason at all.  This care package that I just put together and sent was long overdue!  It is for my cousin and his beautiful family who we last saw a couple of years ago on our honeymoon!  Normally, I try to keep my care package spending under $20 but since this one was headed all the way to Paris, I splurged a little!

A thoughtful card.

BabyLegs for their new baby who is due in September!  I told you they are my new favorite gift!

My favorite chocolate bars.

My favorite kid's movie for Camille.  Poppy and I have watched this hundreds of times.  I never get sick of it AND it's set in Paris!  Parfait!

These are for Aurelie who is pregnant.  I'm a bit late on these since she's due in a couple weeks but they are still good for post pregnancy!

This photo is mounted on wood and is actually for Aurelie's grandparents.  We stayed at their amazing B&B (in the photo) for a few days on our honeymoon.

A collection of photos I took and (finally) got printed from our trip to France.  Isn't Cami adorable!

My challenge to you is... send a care package before the end of the month!  Send it to you best friend, your mom, your uncle you haven't spoken to in a year, your best friend's dog.  I few things I love to put in my care packages are: a great used book, dark chocolate, tea, a photo if you have one, your favorite movie, something special if the recipient is under the weather, Burt's Bees products, lavender oil... The list goes on and on.  A great thing to do is just head to the store and wander through the natural food's section.  They often have tons of small things that would make a perfect care package.  The only thing that must be included is a thoughtful card.  In fact, if you are really low on cash, just sit down and write a thoughtful card to someone you love.  The whole idea is just to take a few minutes and a few dollars to show someone that you are thinking of them and that you love them.  Please let me know if you are planning to participate or come back and let me know if you sent one!

A quick side note.. G and I are hopping in the car to head to Seattle for an audition!  I'm not sure if I'll be able to do a post tomorrow, if not, have a lovely weekend and I'll be back on Monday!

One Thing I Know For Sure

Just a quick thought.  I know for sure that I'm supposed to be this girls mom...

And I'm supposed to be married to this man...

... working as a photographer, nanny, actress and blogger.  For the first time in my life I feel completely fulfilled and happy!

I know that, in this moment...

ALL OF MY DREAMS HAVE COME TRUE.
